Snowmageddon 2001 PsIP

These are on my FB but in case anyone else wants to see and don't mind the crappy-ness of the pictures, these are via iPhone.

This was previous now + round 1 (Monday to Tuesday); round 1 was about 8 inches of fresh snow:

image

image

take note of the little hill of snow at the end if the driveway on the right ....

image

Round 2

During the brunt of the storm:

There is a front walk under here somewhere ...

image

This is when I went out to make sure our furnace vents weren't covered up by the snow, it was getting close so it was good that I did.  From our garage door:

image

image

We really do have neighbors right across the street

image

This morning / clean up time!  The winds are still blowing and the snow is still drifting.

Remember that snow hill I told you to take note of ... it's the little bump on the right in this picture:

image

Tried to get outside to start snow blowing / shoveling:

image

Want another look at that:

image

Had to go out the front door (but even at the front door, snow came in between the storm door and the inside door) to get to the garage, DH offered to go first into the waist deep drift:

image

Remember the snow at the garage door mid-storm?

image

This is my car:

image

That's above my rear bumper:

image

I should go out an measure this:

image

Over waist deep drifts:

Alright girls, now let's see yours!

  • Yesterday was round 1, we got around 4".  It's going to go all day here, but looking out my office window right now it's REALLY coming down.  Not very windy though, looks like you guys had a lot of wind.

Gusts are up to 60mph, some areas have drifts up to 25 feet deep and they declared a "Civil Danger Warning" meaning that most roads are impassable and if you got out and get stranded, the rescue crews (including the national guard) will likely not be able to get to you.

    Now comes the bitter cold.

Go home early if you can, this is a nasty storm!  Stay safe and warm!

  • Holy smokes!! I have never seen that much snow?!?!

I hope all of you are staying safe and warm.

  • Yikes!

All we got was rain and it ended up melting most of the snow that we had from last week. I am actually glad we are below the band this time.

  • Goodness, I LOVE snow, but we got my limit for one snowfall. I don't know how you guys do it. Central IL doesn't usually get more than 6" or 7" at a time. So, this was a big storm for us and we only got 11.5" of snow in the last 24 hours. We got some ice, too, on Monday and yesterday during the day and evening. It was mixture most of yesterday and then all snow over night.

I shoveled out waist high drifts on our sidewalk up to the house and we have some huge drifts in the driveway, which we tag teamed shoveling out this morning. I'm going to hurt tomorrow. Thankfully, a backhoe came through and plowed out the 3 foot drifts at the end of our driveway. The pile he left just past our mailbox is what I am standing on in the photo below. It's probably 8' tall.

I left work early yesterday, around 2:30 and had a horrible time getting home. There were not many cars on the road, but it was blowing and the snow was heavy and hard to drive through. I actually got stuck trying to pull in our driveway. I had to shovel myself out and gun it to get in the garage. Thank goodness our neighbor saw and helped me clear a path with his snowblower so DH could get in.

They closed the interstate by us last night. Over 100miles of it. There are still some interstates closed today and most county roads are impassable. The wind is something fierce outside of town. We had sustained wind of 35mph and faster gusts last night in town. I can't even imagine what it was like in the country with nothing to block it.

Ha, that is a crazy snow hill!  Thank goodness for helpful neighbors, right!?!  This was probably the biggest storm we've seen in over a decade.  Normally we get hit with heavy snow falls throughout the season and a few big storms that usually amount to about half of what we got this time.  This winter we've had it pretty easy and I think the east coast got more of the major storms.

Oh and I am glad we didn't get the ice though, I'll take snow over that any time!

Haha, I've had to shovel myself free many times too!  Car shovels and kitty litter are essentials in the winter!  Glad you made it home though, it was awful out there!

    <a href="www.juliabrockphotography.blogspot.com" target=
  • you asked for it!  On top of the 2+ feet we already had, we've gotten another foot since yesterday morning and now it's a freezing rain

our front yard.  the twigs you see sticking up - that tree is about 4 feet tall.

  • Kara - Yay for pictures Big Smile boo for that much snow!  Are you supposed to get a lot more yet?

Oh and gross for the freezing rain!  Stay safe!

    <a href="www.juliabrockphotography.blogspot.com" target=
  • I think the snow is done for today (more coming Saturday and mid next week though?).  It's just a light freezing rain right now.  Tim and I both stayed home (I'm working, he's cleaning off the roof), no driving in this for us!

I have more pictures (just wandered around the yard) - uploading them now!

  • My parents got 19" last week for the second time this season. They're over 55 total now. Last winter we had over  70 at our house. We average something like 15" annually, so these last two winters are just bizarre.

I wish I took more photos after the second blizzard last Feb (two hit within a week). We had over 40 inches on the ground if I recall correctly.

Right now we have - in the NYC burbs - last weeks snow covered with an inch of ice. You'd never know it in the city though. There is not a trace of it as of 11:30 am when I came in.

I am ready for spring :)

  • Wow, Kara, that is a lot of snow! It that amount of snow normal for you guys? It seems like the eastern part of the country has been getting slammed the past couple of years, but I'm not sure if it's abnormal or if I'm just better at paying attention.

  • Kara - that's so funny about Tim clearing the roof.  When we were in hardware store Saturday they were loading up the owner's truck full of roof rakes to ship to you guys in MA due to all the snow.

I don't think this winter has been abnormal for us here in Maine, seems like Boston south  (especially CT) has been worse than us.

  • We got about another 7" yesterday and another 4+" last night on top of what we already had and then so far an inch of ice on top of it all.  Here are some pics I took 1-27-11 and then today:

The pile by our garage after the storm on 1-27:

The same pile after the last 2 days (if you look close you can see the tip of one of the stakes marking our driveway towards the right):

Look how high the snow is on the porch roof- it's covering half the windows:

    image

The fence in our yard almost buried- the utility boxes are buried thanks to the snow plows (this was on 1-27-11, now the boxes are completely buried & half the fence is, too):

  • Jo - for an entire winter, this is normal.  What's not normal is that isn't only the first week of February.  We've already surpassed our season average and we've got a good two months left when it could possibly snow.

Jaime - we actually bought some tree trimming thing?  Tim took the saw blade off the top and attached a piece of plywood.  He says it's better than the roof rakes.

And yes, southern MA and CT have gotten hit way harder than us and way harder than normal for them.

Jaime- Send some roof rakes our way!  We need one and can't find one anywhere at the local stores.  A local HD even closed yesterday b/c they thought the roof might collapse.  Several buildings already have had roof collapses due to the weight of the snow (no injuries, though).

This is a record breaking winter for us here in CT.  This is what our local news posted about it:

As you already know, January was the snowiest month ever with 57.0? of snow at Bradley International Airport. The old record is 45.3? in December 1945. The total for the season is now up to 79.6? thanks to Winter Storm Ella. We are now in 7th place for the snowiest season on record, and records date back 106 years to 1905! Here is a list of the 10 snowiest seasons on record: 1995-96 115.2?, 1993-94 84.9?, 1966-67 82.8?, 1977-78 82.3?, 1960-61 80.2, 1945-46 79.9?, 1947-48 77.7?, 1915-16 77.1?, 2010-11 77.1?, and 1955-56 76.1?.

Here is an after pic of the fence in our yard from today-

Here is a pic of it in the summer from the other direction...it's up to my knees, so about 2 feet:

  • Jo, these last two winters have been quite abnormal for PHL/NYC. I blame climate change. 1 yr, ok, happens, but two in a row? Both of the big blizzards in Philly last year were in Feb I think. Hopefully not again...

Heather, that is nuts. Love the comparision though.

That's kind of what I'm wondering also. We have lots of extremes lately. We always get four seasons, but it seems like summer and winter have both been much harsher than normal.

yeah, it was over 100 for about a week here last summer. Not weird in, say, St. Louis, but the last time that happenned here I was 10. 3 days over 90 is a major heat wave here. We were over 90 for something like 40  (non-consectutive) days starting in May.

All the snow in the south the last two yrs too...curious to see how the next 10 play out.

  • My neighbor was saying the last time we got this much around here (MA) was in 1995.

Our situation is similar to Kara's. Huge snow banks and just lots and lots of snow.
