Re: anyone have a criminal justice degree?

  • My husband went to school for criminal justice but hasn't finished yet so I can try to answer some of your questions

    imageaimkins:

where did you go to school? He went to Century and MCTC and he liked MCTC better

likes/dislikes of your program? Not sure

what kind of job do you hold? He's currently a security supervisor for a private security company

what other jobs did you consider? He's also interested in being a correctional officer at a jail (not prison) but that job market is horrible right now.  He's also considered being a police officer, but that requires more school.

  • where did you go to school?  St. Cloud State in the late 80's/early 90's (I'm old.  loL)

likes/dislikes of your program?  At the time it was one of the few schools that had a CJ degree.  Most people got a social work degree/license and then sought jobs in the Corrections.  I don't remember much about the degree to be completely honest.  I liked that it was the only program that had you do a thesis, but one of my minors was English.

what kind of job do you hold?  Probation/Parole agent for a metro county.

what other jobs did you consider?  When I left school I really didn't know what I wanted to do.  I did an internship with the county I work for after I graduated so my helath insurance would continue and to give me time to figure it out.  I applied to a couple of schools for paralegal certificates because I thought I wanted to do that.  Then I was offered a part time job in the county I work for and never left.

  • I'm not sure if this is really what you're looking for but...

where did you go to school?  University of St. Thomas.  I have a B.A. in sociology with a focus on criminal justice.  When I went, your major was in sociology with a focus on criminal justice (or applied sociology or law enforcement).

likes/dislikes of your program?  Hmmm.  I don't remember much because I graduated 13 years ago.  I worked for the sociology department for my work study job and got to know the professors pretty well.  They were great people who were really dedicated to the students.  The classes were interesting.  I enjoyed my internship and the police ride along.  They had a former gang member talk to our juvenile delinquency class.  We had to write papers instead of tests.  Aside from that, not much sticks out.

what kind of job do you hold?  I'm an attorney

what other jobs did you consider?  My first job out of college was working for a company that supervised house arrest programs for about a dozen MN counties.  I was basically a babysitter for adults who should have known better.  I wanted to be a probation officer but there were rarely job openings and the couple interviews I had were for jobs I was totally underqualified for.  After a year of working that crap job, I gave up and eventually ended up in banking for about 7 years.  I went to law school and here I am.
