Glad I'm waiting until Monday now (tmi baby post)

Kyle has had 2-3 diapers in the last 24 hours that had stringy/congealed yellowish mucus in the stool. I've already made a call into the pedi's office (of course they're closed today) and was told that if it happens again in the next 24 hours that they'll want to see him. Well, it just happened again, so we'll likely be making a trip to the pedi's tomorrow :(

They asked whether his stool was loose/runny (it's not, it's firm) or if it was red (it's ruddy, probably from eating strawberries and carrots yesterday... either way, it didn't look like there was any blood in the poop itself, but the last bowel movement's mucus was a bit streaked with light red).

I'm trying not to worry too much or googling what all the possible causes are. I don't want to freak myself out.

Aside from a bit more crankiness (but he's teething, who wouldn't be cranky when little razor blade teeth are popping through your gums?) I'm not seeing any other abnormal behavior for him.

*deep breath*

I'll keep you ladies updated tomorrow after the likely sick visit. But I'm so glad I opted to postpone starting the 3-day potty training for Shannon until next Monday now!

Re: Glad I'm waiting until Monday now (tmi baby post)

  •  Ok totally TMI baby poop response!

Don't freak out at all! We've been through more poop changes with Maddy than I can count. First was the mucous that had us all suspecting a dairy allergy, then there was no poop from starting solids. To rainbow of colors now with the different foods.

    My doc said this:
    1) red blood is good. it's the blood you can't see that's usually more dangerous. Red blood usually means something is irritated and maybe they had a hard poop that just caused a little fissure inside.
    2) mucous - caused by a BAZILLION things. In our case, Maddy's was caused by all the extra saliva they swallow when teething. Yep, all that saliva causes poop changes that mimic so many other things.

So from your statement that he's teething, and what with all the new foods they are trying right now, I honestly wouldn't worry much. The strawberries might be bothering him too. I've held off berries from Maddy b/c of her poop issues.  What other foods has he started/tried lately? Anything else new? Or acidic/seedy like the strawberries? Was it pureed strawberries or actual strawberry? Anything you've suddenly eaten that changed your breastmilk?

I spent weeks trying to figure out what was going on with Maddy, to the doc and back - and it was absolutely nothing but teething. So take heart, take a deep breath, and keep us all posted! here if you need me ;-)

  • He's been eating freeze-dried strawberries from Trader Joe's that I break up into smaller pieces. He absolutely loves them! But, he's been eating them for almost two weeks now, so it's not all that new to his digestive system. He really hasn't had anything new in the last 3-4 days. And my diet hasn't changed either.

As I said, I'm trying not to fret about it, but it's hard not to when it's your baby. We'll see what the doctor's office says tomorrow. I will definitely keep you posted. Thanks for the pep talk, Michele! ;)

  • Oh gosh! I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow and it's nothing serious! Hang in there!

  • Exactly what Michelle said!
  • Even still, it might just be something irritating his belly. It's impossible as the mother to "not worry about it" but hang in there and keep us posted!!

  • Is he or has he been sick/congested?  I believe in both babies and adults who have colds and extra mucus that is swallowed can be passed thru poop.

Might be something to think about as well.

  • Aside from some more drooling due to teething, he really hasn't been sick or congested. I just want to know whether it's nothing, or a sign of something worse. Erring on the side of caution.

  • I hope the little guy feels better. I have nothing for ya as far as what his stool could be telling you. It stinks having to wait to see the pedi and I am actually surprised that they don't have anyone on call????

Let me know how the 3 day potty training goes. I have higher hopes for G than I had for my dude....

  • I agree with everything Michele said. Good luck, Alicia. I hope you get some answers soon!

A nurse called me back. But the office itself was closed. Don't know who the on-call doc was, since I didn't actually speak to one. Calling tomorrow morning.
