I've been lurking the board for a little while, so I thought it would be nice of me to do a little intro.
My H is Navy. We were first stationed in Pensacola for a little over a year, and then moved to Jacksonville this past fall. We were only expecting to be in Jax for about 6 months, but we're now going to request that we stay here permanently (or as permanently as the military gets).
I managed to find a job pretty quickly after moving so between both of us being busy with work and unpacking we haven't had much time to explore the city or make new friends.
There's no better way to get to know a city than through asking locals, so that's what I'm doing here.
Re: Hi ladies!
Welcome! If you've been lurking you know what a great group this is.
What kinds of things do you like to do or are look for ideas about?
Hi & Welcome!
Let's see. I do a lot of reading (a mix of nonfiction and fiction), know how to knit, watch a lot of sports, and enjoy hitting up the bar every so often. I'm also in the process of convincing him to adopt a dog. We have not scoped out the bar scene in Jacksonville yet though, so any recommendations on that would be awesome.
Other than the knitting, we're like twins.
First off, we have a recently resurrected book club and we're meeting on the last Monday of February. You're welcome to join! More info to come.
Sorry to turn this into an ask me anything, buuut... what kind of sports do you like to watch? How close are you to getting your H to agree to adopting a dog?
As far as bars, it depends on what part of town you live in and what kind of bar you like. At the beach, H and I really enjoy Atlantic Beach - Ragtime, Caribee Key, Lemon Bar when it's in season. All very laid back. Ocean 60 is over there too and they have killer martinis. I also like Jamrock in Jax Beach. Tinseltown area is fun too and more centrally located (Southside) - Mellow Mushroom has an awesome patio as does Urban Flats.
Hi & welcome! What area of town are you in? Ditto LB on all of the Atlantic beach bar rec's. Those are all of our favorite places to go out as well. The Casa Marina in Jax beach also has a cool little martini bar on the 3rd floor (& a fantastic Sunday brunch.)
ETA: One Ocean in Atlantic Beach also has a really cool bar/lounge area.
Oh, book club! How cool. Depending on what time on Monday that might work for me.
We watch a lot of NCAA sports (football and basketball mostly). We both went to Penn State and were a bit disappointed in the Outback Bowl outcome (which we were able to go to!). And then NFL football, some hockey and baseball depending on what else is on.
I have convinced him to start looking for dogs once we know for sure that we are staying in Jax (so sometime late spring) with the expectation that it might take me a a couple months. Although, I'm a sucker for a cute puppy so we'll see how that goes.
We live over on the Westside/Argyle Forest area so that's its close for him to get to work. We definitely need to go explore the beach area. Haven't even been over there yet.
Thanks for the welcomes, everyone.
How is it that my BABY is going to be 3?
