Question about Facebook

If you report a picture, will the person who posted it know that you were the one to report it?

A girl I know from HS has been posting all of these 'modeling' pictures.  A lot of them are in lingerie, and some of them are her naked but covering her breasts, or with a tiny strip of liquid latex covering her butt.  I feel like this qualifies as nudity/pornography and frankly, I think that it shouldn't be on Facebook.  I know I can just de-friend her, but I feel like she needs a reality check.

  • I don't know for sure, but I've heard it's anonymous.  That's ick.

I hate to defriend people because I honestly get a little hurt when people do it to me (I know, thicken thy skin!), so I hide instead.  But hiding her won't help her get a reality check!

  • Ok, I'm going to do it.  It's weird, because we have a lot of friends in common so if I unfriended her I would have to block her, otherwise I would keep showing up on her 'people you may know.'  And like I said, I really think she needs the reality check.  Amazingly, she gets tons of comments on how awesome her pictures are, and no one ever says, "Maybe you shouldn't post these on FB" or, "You know, one day when your son is older he might he these."

I've been tempted before to photoshop out her face and share them here, they're so ridiculous.

  • Ferds, that's the main reason I didn't do it.  I figured that between them being inappropriate and me not having permission to post them, it was probably a violation of TOS.

    PM me your e-mail address.

If you're friends with her and think she needs a reality check, why don't you just tell her the above instead of telling on her to the facespace gods?

  • Stephanie - We don't talk, and we were never close.  I accepted her friend request a while ago because it's nice to see how people from high school are doing.  I actually de-friended her a while back (while deleting people I don't actually keep in touch with), and she just friended me again.  When I didn't accept, she just friended me again so I finally accepted.  I don't hate her, so I didn't think it was worth blocking her.

I don't think it's that she's trying super hard to be my FB friend, either - I think she sees me on her 'people you may know', realizes she knows me, and requests me as a friend.  She has so many 'friends' that she doesn't know who she's requested in the past.  I have considered de-friending and blocking her but it seems harsh for someone that I'm just not close with as opposed to someone I don't like.

I realize I could still tell her how I feel, but I would feel weird not talking to someone for ten years and then initiating a conversation about inappropriate pictures.  Besides, the report feature is there for a reason, right?

  • I think the report feature is there for someone who's harassing me or for a more danger-fraught situation, not just to get someone to remove photos or something I don't like. What would happen if every individual reported a status they don't like, or one that offends them? I think it's unnecessary when facebook gives you the tools to individually control what you see and don't see, and who can have access to you and your profile.

In this situation, I would hide her or defriend her - you've defriended her before - and then just not accept future requests.

I think reporting someone is harsher than  not accepting their future friend requests, but that's just me. She could think these modeling photos are artistic and not in any way pornographic or lewd. If you don't like them, don't look at them.

I just don't like to borrow trouble like that and I am certainly not the morality police.

  • The report feature asks specifically why you're reporting it - if it's harassment, nudity, etc.  If it didn't, I wouldn't just report it without an explanation.  I guess it is a little like taking on the role of 'morality police', but you're not supposed to upload nudity to facebook, whether you think it's artistic or not, and I have the right to report it if I see it.  I still haven't done it because I am on the fence about reporting vs defriending, so it's not like I don't see your point.

  • Personally I would defriend, not report. I have friends on FB that are "models" (i use the term loosely) and when their pics come on to the news feed I just dont click on them to see them bigger or the entire album.

  • In case anyone cares, I didn't report her, I de-friended her and blocked her.  I was just going to leave it at de-friending but some other stuff came up and it seemed better that way.

    Good move.

Smile It wasn't JUST because of you, but you did make me think about why I was unsure in the first place.  This is why I bounce ideas off of people on here!  I promise, I am capable of making decisions on my own, it just takes longer Stick out tongue
