Medical question for you guys, though of course I'm going to the doctor ASAP:
I've been having a lot of abdominal cramping for a little over a week, sometimes very mild and sometimes pretty severe. A few are in my lower left flank, which is stranger than the rest. This led to me to worry about an upper UTI, despite the flank cramps being way lower than I associate with that.
I've been getting UTIs about once a year for 3 years like clockwork. Docs have commented, but haven't decided to test for anything. I think I need to force them this time.
So I got my UTI of the year the 6th of January. It was either caused by sex with the SO, unlikely since I get the bastards without him or any penetrative partners, or the hotel body wash. I know blaming body wash is weird, but my mum was also particularly susceptible and got them after bubble baths. Last February, I got one the day after someone surprised me with a soapy handjob. Similar situation this year, really, with SO being ready for sex again while we were showering after the first go.
I didn't go to the doctor for this year's UTI. Stupid, I know, but I had to treat the symptoms with AZO at work since I couldn't leave (awesome SO ran errand for me), and the next day, all the symptoms were gone! I did NOT feel like shelling out a $25 copay and buying antibiotics to treat something I knew I'd notice if it weren't gone.
Cue last week, with the cramps, and slightly more urinary urgency than usual. Nothing noteworthy, without the cramps. NOT what I associate with a UTI, during which I can hardly make it to a restroom only to produce little-to-no urine. I have some suspicions that the UTI has been lying low and is now in my kidneys or something. Obviously, I'm going to the doctor to get that checked and fixed. But does that make any sense? My friend had that exact thing happen, and hers didn't go 2 weeks without symptoms between the normal UTI and the kidneys. Is it possible not to notice it for that long?
I'm due for a period starting about this weekend, though I don't even bother to keep track, they're so irregular and hard to identify. The reason they're so light is that I have an IUD. I've had it for 2 years with no problems, and my strings still feel normal.
EDIT: Oh, also some mild nausea/distaste. I'm not even remotely a picky eater, so the fact that some foods aren't agreeing with me is really weird.
Re: UTI?
See a urologist. I think they still do intravenal pyelograms; they'll shoot a dye into you and then determine what's what with your urinary system.
See a doc NOW if you think the infection is in your kidneys. That's nothing to fart around with.
I'm just getting over a kidney infection as a result of an upper UTI. Although your symptoms don't sound like mind, I agree with PP that it's nothing to mess around with. Definitely get checked out.
That being said... My signs went from typical UTI burning sensation to 103 fever and flu symptoms in one day, so I didn't have time to react. I had the WORST backache of my life, totally debilitating and miserable. Fever, chills, nauseous, etc. Still burned when I urinated, frequency, urgency, etc. But when I went to the doctor he treated me for the flu, not for UTI/kidney infection. Stupid doctor wouldn't listen to me! Anyway, I was miserable for a good week, like a bad flu. Doesn't sound like what you have right now, but if it IS -- don't mess around with it!
Good luck! Hope you get it figured out soon!
I have been getting a UTI about once a year as well. Just this Monday I was sitting at work and thought I strained my back. I took some advil and it went away. Later that night my back hurt so bad I was in tears. My dh was at work, and it was 10 pm, and at that point the pain was all to familiar so I went to the dr, in the morning and sure enough...uti. They sent the urine out for a culture, so we'll see if it is anything worse than a uti. I just started feeling better today, but yesterday I just stayed in bed all day. I didn;t even have the burning while urinating, it just hit me like a ton of bricks.
I am a nurse, not a doctor, but it does sound as though it could possibly be an bladder infection. I would definitly go to the doctor as soon as possible and take all of your antibiotics because it can spread into your bloodstream (not to scare you! but I do work in the ICU). That is really terrible that you are so prone to UTIs. I hear they are quite painful. Feel better!
