Weight loss program day 1

I'm cashing in my Groupon I got a few weeks ago for Dr Garcia medi weight loss and I am officially on a diet starting today.   I hope to lose 15 lbs in 30 days, or 4 inches from my waist, and then maintain.  Breakfast - one appetite supressant, 2 fat burner supplements, 3 eggs, a cup of black coffee and a liter of water.   Lunch will be 2 oz low fat string cheese and 2 ounces of chicken, washed down with lots of water, an appetite supressant and 2 fat burner supplements.  Dinner will be 3 slices of turkey bacon or 3 oz salmon, a multivitamin, and an appetite supressant.  Somewhere in all this eating I need to find time to drink a gallon of water today as well.  This will be my life for up to 5 days or whenever my POAS is the right color.  Then I will enjoy my beloved veggies again.  I know this seems extreem, but it is Dr monitored and I have support from my DH and family, and I know people who it's worked for.  Here goes!

Re: Weight loss program day 1

  • Do you realize thats only about 600 calories?

I think this Dr. is on crack you and need to ask for a refund.

You don't have a lot to lose so losing 15 lbs in 30 days is extreme. 2 lbs per week is a much more reasonable amount.

Have you thought about WW or counting calories, the medi weightloss doesn't seem like a very  healthy approach!

  • I know girl, it's stupid.  If anyone would have told me they were going to do this 6 months ago I would have given them the "just burn more than you consume" argument.  But this girl is frustrated beyond belief.  I've been at 1200 calories for 2 months, with splurges of course but 2 hrs of cardio a week and 2 hrs of yoga/pilates a week, and my waist is still growing and in 3 years my body fat has gone from 29 to almost at 35 percent. I also know that creating such a calorie deficit will be impossible to maintain, but at this point, it's worth a shot for me.   I'm 34 and healthy, not getting any younger, just fatter.  :/

  • You might have been eating too little... I feel your pain though. I actually just start on WW online last week.  I only really want to lose 10lbs or so but it keeps me accountable.  I just read this today in regards to eating too little, so something to consider.  http://www.priorfatgirl.com/2011/02/sharing-a-story.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+PriorfatgirlJen+(Priorfatgirl+%C2%BB+jennifer)

Ditto 1200 calories is probably too little for you. If I want to lose 2 lb a week TDP has me at 1400, and honestly I'm way to cranky and hungry at that amount! You are on your feet the entire time you're at work and working out as much as you do you definitely should be eating more.

Ang- good luck with WW I joined Dec. 7th and lost 12 lbs so far although I stopped going last month because I just didn't have time, I've been able to matain the loss without any issues.  I'll be signing back up after my schedule stops being so crazy. I really liked the program!

Would you be interested in doing WW? It's a way healthier approach and it's effective too! I'd be down for being a buddy through the program with you, I'd even be willing to drive to your neck of the woods for meetings so we could go together!

  • Hi Sara - I don't post here very often, but I did something similar to this plan a little over a year ago.  It was a medical weight loss center I went to that gave me the appetite suppressants, B-12 shots, and l was limited to 800 calories a day (which was 4 little shakes and a bar a day).

Although, I did lose almost 50 lbs (not to mention hundreds of dollars), once I got off of the meds, I gained almost all of it back.  Once you get off the appetite suppressant, which is basically just an amphetamine, your appetite will come back with a vengeance!  On the plus side the pills will make you have super dry mouth which will make you drink more water! :)

I'm not saying any of this to change your mind because I know exactly how you feel.  I just wanted you to hear from someone who has been there, done that. Maybe see if you can start to ween yourself off of the suppressants as you get closer to your goal weight as to not throw your metabolism out of whack like I did.

With that being said, I'm starting WW next week.

Yes  I was hoping someone would be able to share a first hand experience! This is they same thing that has happen to anyone I know who has done this.

and YAY for WW. I really really liked the program! It works if you stick to it! Free fruits and veggies are awesome!

  • Ok, my turn, too. I say good luck in whatever you do, but I think your 6-months-ago- self was right.

What does then "and then maintain" mean? Obviously you can't maintain the 30-day thing, and honestly, I think losing 15 pounds in 30 days would be a bit of a shock to the body; I just don't see how that could be good for you at all.

And I guess I just wanted to add another vote for Weight Watchers. There's one woman in my meetings who's very inspiring and girlfriend is dedicated to the program. She hit a plateau that lasted 6 months -- but she kept on with the program and now she's hit her goal weight. I have to say I'd probably quit if I went 3 months with no results at all. But she did it. And this is something that's maintainable, y'know?

For my part, I've lost 14 pounds so far. It's been over a pretty long period of time, but if you were more dedicate, which I think you are, you'd probably do better than that, lol. I had a few weeks here and there where I didn't really track well, didn't lose, etc. So it's been slow and steady, but as they say, that's what wins the race.  :-)

If you've tried the program before but didn't like it, try it again now. I'm loving their new points plus program; it's much easier to manage daily life (read=learn to live like this forever), and I'm losing weight faster.

Good luck, though. I know the frustrations of weight loss, and I know how much harder it is at 33 than 23. ;-)

LOVE the free fruits and veggies.  My biggest problems are when I go to our office we go out for lunch everyday.... sadly i notice that even when I get something that I think is pretty healthy, i eat almost a whole days worth of points.  Also the weekends are bad because we usually go for dinner at least once and I love me some wine on the weekends too.... thank god for weekly points! :)

  • Thanks ladies, Bre2Be I definately appreciate the first hand experience, I was hoping someone here has done it.  and Loska, I just got home, I am going to read the link now, thank you! I have a friend who's been sucessful with medi, but he had gastric bypass years prior so he already has a smaller stomach.  My sister has done it but she wasn't sucessful because she can't take pills without swallowing food.  She is starting again tomorrow though so we will be doing it together.  I'm only wanting to lose 16 lbs, she needs to lose 60, so she has a longer haul than me and I don't envy her - my battle seems hard enough.  The thirst part is true for me so far, I've drank more water today than I have last week.  and the running to the bathroom... well!!  Also, I was told that since the supressants are amphetamines that you should not just stop taking them, you pretty much need to taper off?  I hoping that I lose 16  and then have a 5 lb leeway.  Right now I'm 5'2" 141, I want to maintain 130 with a normal body fat percentage.   Right now I'm checking body fat at the gym and fighting tears every time.  I need to try this.
CPH, thank you for the WW suggestion and your concern.  You're a sweet friend and I hear ya.  And I actually have done WW, my gyno suggested it at my last appt.  Results were I'm too scatterbrained to be good at it.  I lost 5 lbs the first 2 weeks, then maintained for 2, then gained .5, then gained .5, etc.  Since my schedule is so funky and I'm pretty unorganized I think I would do better on the "filling foods" option, which is basically how I eat anyway, with small amounts of treats thrown in for good measure.  I'm still an online member (mostly for the recipes, not the tracking) and I will definately take you up on the offer to go to a meeting!   I'm going to keep trying this for the 30 days, then I will do WW to maintain.   If you'll still have me after I go though with this crazy idea Wink

Of course I would still have you! Just be careful! Have you tried the app for WW? I think you can get it with the Anroid (thats what you have right) I used it on my Iphone and it was SO nice to have it right there for tracking and check points values, I'm always on my phone anyway so it wasn't really a bother for me!

    good luck!

Thanks!  I appreciate a mom's point of view.  I've been struggling with this weight thing so much for the past 2 years that honestly that is the only thing making me hesitate about having a pregnancy.  When I think of becoming pregnate all I think about is how much weight I could lose breastfeeding!  Seeing your awesome siggy pics made me think of it.  Congrats!  14 lbs is awesome!!!  I think I would definately like the free fruits and veggies.  I like that it encourages people to eat more fruit since it also has fiber and health benifits.  Definately better to snack on an orange that a WW ice cream sandwich (which I loved when I was doing the diet by the way!)  I will definately try it again.  I even put the points app on my phone, front page.  The WW experience was so disheartening last time that I haven't used the new app yet, but it is still there and I will go back to it again.  Nice to know there are girls here it has been sucessful for :)

Oh yeah, "and then maintain" means I don't imagine I could ever stay at 125 for a long period of time, 130 is more reasonable for me (I'm rather large chested for my height:)

  • Sara - Did you try WW with the original plan or the points plus? I would never have done WW on the original plan it just wasn't that great. With the points plus it's really focusing on choosing better for you foods and really a great way to think about eating!

Oh and by the way I'm currently 5'4" and 152 lbs. I always think it's a little crazy when people around my height weigh so little but I have to remember not everyone is built the same way.

You mentioned your body fat was 29%, what weight were you when it was at that? I've been 18% body fat (the best looking Jen ever, lol) and I still weighed 145-148 lbs! Muscle is more dense than fat so while you're losing and working out keep that in mind, if you feel good and your clothes fit (the way you want) who cares what you weigh!

Ok, Ok, I'll try to stop preaching now!

That is definately something I can relate to!  (except) I've not been underweight since I before high school, and I never was concerned with my weight until 25, but since my waist has grown as an adult I think I'm focused on it too much for it to be healthy.  I also learned this yesterday -  they recommend "moderate" exercise as opposed to anaerobic so you burn fat rather than glucose.  Could I have been burning glucose and storing fat all this time?  That's super annoying.

When I was at 29% I weighed 128 which was perfect for me. That was 3 years ago.  Now I'm 141 (today I was 145 but it's the water) and 34% body fat.  WTH?  I'm wearing a size 8 right now and my waist is 34 1/2.  Definately not feeling good here.  What has changed in 3 years is I'm happily married and a non smoker.  I don't need to get back into my 2's or 4's but I would be very happy with 28-29" waist and size 6 jeans to look/feel good on me again.

What did you use to measure your bf% those scales are grossly inaccurate!

  • Just the thing with the electrodes that you hold onto like a steering wheel.  The clinic just uses a scale.  I would love to have the calipers done, I have heard they are more accurate.  But the one I uses is still consistent day to day and I would like to see it consistently going down.
