New-to-us house (pay for cleaning or do it ourselves?)

My fiance and I are moving into a short sale house before the end of the month and have a very good feeling the current residents will either be out at the last minute or not at all. Our contract states they can't legally be there after closing but we'll see.

My question is, once they finally do get out, there will most likely be some messes left and it will feel really good to come move in to a clean home. I'd like to super clean everything and was wondering if we should pay someone to come deep clean the floors or if we should just buy a really good vacuum/steamer and do it ourselves? I don't yet know what's available to us because I haven't done much of this type of cleaning yet, but would it be worth it to have the "tool" in the future to keep it clean? Which would be more cost efficient and better done?

  • If it were me, i'd hire a company to clean the bathrooms, kitchen and floors.  Not a ton of money, and the elbow grease and time it saves me is well worth it.  I'll be doing PLENTY in a new house; i don't need to do that, too.
  • Personally, I'd hire people.  If you really want to do it yourself, and KNOW how clean everything is, I think you can rent steam cleaners and the like.  I wouldn't use it on a regular basis enough to justify buying, but that's just me.

Ditto this. Hire someone to do the nasty work. I wasted 2 or 3 days scrubbing kitchen appliances, cabinets, baseboards, grimy hardwood floors, closet shelving, every crack and crevice of the bathroom, etc. I'm hireing a cleaning company next time... they'll clean it just as well and in less time. I'll be hiring movers too. I've moved my own stuff enough times. I can do the packing, but someone else can do the heavy lifting.

  • I would hire someone to clean, especially if there is carpeting. You will need someone to professionally clean it. Hopefully they will not leave to much junk behind, but DH has bought SS & foreclosures that had so much crap, he had to hire a clean out crew w/dumpster.
  • I work as a house cleaner and professional organizer, and I started this when I was in college. I would suggest looking/posting your need at a local college, you can get a student who needs some extra money, and not pay as much as you would for a professional cleaning service, it's a win-win!
  • I've hired people to clean before moving out of rentals (to get a full security deposit back) which includes not just the normal bathroom/dusting/floors, but washing inside and outside of cabinets, cleaning the refrigerator, wiping windows, etc. I think I paid $200 for that last time, in a 3 bedroom apartment.

  • Hire someone. It will save you in the long run.

  • We recently moved into an older home. I hired a cleaning lady to do the bathrooms, kitchen and all the flooring.  We rented a carpet cleaning machine (home depot) and did the carpets ourselves.  With everything you have to worry about with moving, it's so much easier to hire someone not matter what the cost!
  • So what if I'm a super perfectionist and am not quite confident in another persons ability to clean my house? Stick out tongue

I just need to take a chill pill and relax, this whole thing is a lot to handle. I greatly appreciate all of the input and will definitely look into some cleaning services.

Maybe I'll look for a job with them to "perfectly clean" other peoples homes.

    Thank you! Thank you Ladies!

This is me to a T. I personally would hire somebody to do the dirty work- nitty gritty stuff. And then before I moved in all my stuff... I would do a "my way" cleaning just to be sure.

I know if I tried to clean the whole thing myself I would go crazy with everything else invovled in moving- but I wouldn't fell 100% confident in getting done "my way" lol I don't even trust DH to do it my way.. and he cleans for a living. haha.

Yes.. I do realize I sound insane lol

  • I would hire a professional.  If it's a short sale, you've got a good deal on the house, and the extra you pay to have a cleaning service do EVERYTHING is worth the investment.

I think it might ending up being more than a two-person job, no matter how motivated you are!

  • Hire someone.

I had friends who moved into a short sale home and the owner's let there dogs "go" all over every inch of the carpets.  Apparently, they were pissed at the situation they were in and gave a laxative to their dogs and left them in the house for two days.  Gross, I know.

I know your situation may be different, but you never know what kind of surprises will be left for you.  I recently rented my home out and had every square inch cleaned before I would let the tenants move in, but not everyone is like me.
