Question about Retro Pay?

I got a raise 1-17-11 our pay date was 1-21-11 it didn?t show up and I didn?t think it would but when my last check came which is going to be deposited tomorrow 2-4-11 the raise didn?t show up neither.

I asked my boss and she said that it didn?t get to the right people before the period ended yada yada and then I asked if I was going to get retro and she said no? is this allowed?

I feel like I should be paid with my increase in pay.

I suggest going to HR about this. You should be paid if you were offered more money for the time frame after you were offered and accepted it.

Depending on when your pay check covers, you might not be as far off as you think. (For instance, in my company, we get paid biweekly, but a pay change that is effective on January 17th would first appear on my February 4th paycheck, because that covers the 1/17 - 1/30 time frame). So, first, check the pay dates that the checks really cover to determine if it's missing from 1 check or 2.

Second, what form of communication did you get that told you that 1/17 was the effective date? Was that they day they told you about it? or Did they say that that was the date from which your pay would change? Again, in my company, for many reasons, we'll tell people about them in advance, but they're not effective until a future date of a couple of weeks.

If you've got written confirmation that you were told 1/17, then go to HR to ask them to verify when you paycheck will be corrected and when you should expect to see the retro pay.

We are on the same bi-weekly pay schedule!

I was told in a meeting and shame on me I didn?t get anything in writing. I was told that ?it probably wouldn?t hit on this check (1-21-11) but should on the next (2-4-11) and if it doesn?t come talk to my boss.

I went to my boss this morning and she basically said it was caught up in getting all the correct signatures before it was processed by HR, so I probably won?t get the retro? I should take this as a lesson in having something in writing for EVERYTHING.

So I will cross my fingers that it shows up on the 2-18-11 check.

Check with HR to see if they have a policy on pay raises. Mine coincided with my hiring anniversary. The one year my manager fell behind (and we got paid monthly, so I had to wait an entire month to find out!), I was paid retroactively. Unfortunately, they're not liable for interest or making up for the morale destruction for not paying you your raise on time, but we had the policies in place to ensure we were paid in an equitable way to our co-workers.
