The Best Thing I Ever Ate

I love this show and I was thinking that we should do our own version of it. It's chefs talking about the best _________ they ever ate. They describe it and tell you where they ate it. They always chose a theme. Tonight's episode is The Best Wrapped Food I Ever Ate... So what is yours?

Mine:  Butternut Squash Ravioli at Filippo's in Oakland/Rockridge. It's delicate but rustic and the sage and brown butter sauce on top is so good.

Runner up: Chile Verde Burrito at Tio Alberto's in Isla Vista, CA. Got me hooked on chile verde!

Re: The Best Thing I Ever Ate

  • I am a huge fan of crepes, I love them sweet, savory, and anywhere in between. But my favorite would have to be the banana peanut butter one from Max Brenner back in NYC. Banana, peanut butter, milk chocolate sauce, toffee bits, whipped cream, and a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. I'm drooling just thinking about it!
  • Ooh good post!

I'd say the chips (fries) I bought from a street vendor and doused with vinegar while studying in London. Of course the experience may have had something to do with it, but man, those were good.

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • It could have been the time and place, but when DH and I were in Ireland, we stopped at the English Market in Cork and got a Moroccan beef sausage. The weather was cold and rainy and the sausage was hot and delicious!

  • My grandma's tamales are my favorite thing ever. I really need to learn to make them like her so I can bring them to a GTG or something. You all will swoon. =)

  • My uncle and my grandma make the most delicious little steamed dumplings in a rice-based wrapper.  I still need to learn how to make them as you can't really buy them anywhere, they seem to be a family thing. They're a lot of work though, because the stuffing is all kinds of stuff chopped into itty bitty little pieces.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • The butternut squash tortelli with brown butter, sage, & Parmesan cheese at Todd English's Olives restaurant in Las Vegas. OMG Heaven. They were more sweet than savory and were like nothing I'd ever had before or since. Yum.

  • The Obama Roll at Genki Japanese Restaurant in Berkeley. Everytime J and I go there, I HAVE to order it.

  • Ribollita at a tiny restaurant called Mario's in Florence. It was amazing.
  • not sure if this qualifies as 'wrapped' but the crabcakes at Connelly's at InnerHarbor in Baltimore are to die for. before we left the east coast, my parents took us kids there JUST so we could have them before we left.

  • A salmon dish prepared 3 ways (smoked over pinapple, chilled in a salad of some sort, and something else) prepared bya private chef at a winery in Paso. It was literally to die...it was some kind of special salmon and the chef was someone's private chef that used limited salt, butter and sugar...the meal was melt in my mouth amazingness.

The funny part-I didn't even like seafood! But it was a private dinner, the chef was so excited he got to use this salmon and I wasn't about to say no! I'm glad I did...I've enjoyed trying fish ever since!
