Anyone in Health Care Admin?
I have the opportunity to get another degree for free/very cheap & I've been wanting to go back to school anyway, so figured I should take advantage. One of the degrees I've considered is Health Care Administration.
If you're in the field, do you like it? What is the worst part of the job for you?
Re: Anyone in Health Care Admin?
I'm not, but my dad is. He has been for years. It has been EXTREMELY hard for me to see what he's gone through professionally. The field is constantly changing - and when it changes (aka, a hospital acquires a practice, one hospital merges with another, etc), the admins usually get cut out. He's been in about 10 jobs in 15 years. It's been really hard for him and he's tried to get out of the field but it's been impossible. He regrets not doing something else because of the changing medical arena making it nearly impossible to stay in one job for a long time. He doesn't feel like he has security.
Sorry to be negative about it, but it has been really heartbreaking for me to see my dad in such an unstable profession. Maybe someone else has had a better experience.
Don't be sorry! These are the kinds of things I am interested in hearing about.
Thanks for sharing. I'm just sorry for your dad, too, especially for the bolded part. The stress of adapting to new management is one thing; having no choice but to move to a new job entirely is so much worse.

it's been the same way for my dad in his healthcare management field. he started out working on the hospital side and then switched over to managed care. it sounds crazy how much he switches jobs (I mean, I could never keep up with it), but it's just the way it is in his field and at his level. when we were younger, we moved around a LOT but in the past 10 years or so, my parents have stayed put while he travels all over for his work and is gone a lot instead.
all that said - I know a few departmental administrators for university medical centers now and they haven't experienced anything like that. and most of them have MBAs instead of MHAs.
sorry I couldn't help more.
