What kind of light set up are you looking at?  I keep going back and forth about doing something like this.  But I can't decide if I want to do a light box, or just get some spotlight type deals with daylight bulbs.

I'm desperately trying to find a way to improve my pictures while I save up for a new camera.  I'm just getting SO frustrated with my pictures lately, even after they are edited.

Re: *Catherine*

  • I think we're going to try to do this (the DIY one). I don't have a lot of money to spend, but Clint's pretty handy and says he could do this, he's just unsure of the light fixtures, but I've made lamps before so I think I can remember how to do that.

I want something that's not going to be awful to set up and take down all the time, and won't be a problem to store. I may start photographing food in the living room though, where we have more room for a setup.

I have a new camera, and it's a decent one although I think it's a little *too* automated. the close up setting is very difficult to use because it's so sensitive, so you can't really use it unless you have a tripod. If I get a setup in the living room with the lights, I may be able to actually use a tripod, which I can't in the kitchen.

I kind of wish food blogging wasn't so popular and the standards weren't set so high! I wasn't even sure I'd have pictures at all when I started blogging.

ditto, ditto, ditto!  That DIY one looks pretty simple, I bookmarked it.  A tripod is SO on my list of things too.  I get so mad, my camera is so sensative!  I can't hold my hands still enough.  I end up taking like 8-10 pictures before I get one that isn't blurry.

Our dining room table (where we usually eat) is big enough that I think I could set something up on one end of the table without it interfering and being the way of us eating.  That way I could just leave it set up unless people were coming over.

It wasn't too bad in the sumemrtime when it was still light outside at dinner time.  I try to do pictures of leftovers the next day, but it's still a PITA.

It's really hard not to compare pictures to some of the more pupular blogs.  I try not to let myself, because it jsut makes me feel bad about my blog and my pictures.  I try to remind myself that it isn't why I do this.  But I still don't want crappy pictures :)

  • oh I should set mine up on the dining table! I never thought of that, ours accumulates stuff all the time (it's the only table we have, aside from the coffee table) so I tend to write it off as a permanent mess. But if I had my photography set up there, we'd make more of an effort not to fill it up with junk mail and receipts and stuff. We don't get much light in there except in the morning, but that's the same for our whole house, we're surrounded by trees.

Usually I photograph on the island in the kitchen, but with all the appliances and ingredients that don't fit anywhere else, I'll never be able to fit a lighting set up there.

I'm in the What's Baking group, and most of the girls in that group are more like me, with no fancy set up or fancy camera, and it makes me feel better about my pictures :)

  • I think I missed the initial memo on the What's Baking, is it too late to join now?

  • not too late, we just had 3 people join up this month. I think it's adamswife06 that's in charge. Her email is listed on her blog.

I like doing it, I think it's a little less intense than other bake/cook-alongs, and people are thinking of some really good themes. February is something appropriate to serve on Valentine's Day.

  • sweet!  Just emailed her.  The round up isn't before V-day, is it?  Like we can use the recipe we make for v-day?

I have noticed that it's a little less intense.  I like it :)  I can't handle some of the bigger ones (like PPQ and Tuesdays w/ Dorie), seems like so much pressure!

  • I don't think they've announced the round up date, but in the past they're usually on the 25th of the month.
