Re: anyone have a criminal justice degree?

  • I can speak on behalf of my DH (with as little personal details as possible):

    - He got his BA and MA from a private university.

    - He always said that they taught too much theory and statistics, which is only good if you're going into theory and statistics. The actual coursework will do little to prepare you for day-to-day field work if that's what you're interested in. However, the degree itself is necessary.

    - He works as an investigative analyst for the federal government.

    - He did not consider other jobs. Federal jobs mean job security. His advice would probably be to pick an agency you like and apply for any and every job available there. Once in, most people move around within the agency as they gain practical experience. For example, he started in admin and is now an analyst.

where did you go to school? state college

likes/dislikes of your program? they were in the process of changing the program and adding a couple different certificate programs during my 3rd year which i personally think subtracted from the quality of their current program. but other than that it was just OKAY.

what kind of job do you hold? federal government law enforcement

what other jobs did you consider? nothing really. like the pp said, the federal gov. means job security and an above average paycheck

where did you go to school? (local college vs online) I received my B.A. from a local private university

likes/dislikes of your program? I like the small class sizes and personal attention from the professors...7 years later and they remembered me enough to write my grad school recommendation!

what kind of job do you hold? Used to be a probation officer, currently unemployed

what other jobs did you consider? Child and Family Protective Services investigator or caseworker

  • where did you go to school? (local college vs online) - - I got my BA in Criminology from a small private school.  I got my MA in Criminal Justice from a SUNY school. [Just to mention I'm actually in a dual masters program getting my MA in CJ and my MA in Social Work]

likes/dislikes of your program? The private school - LOVED that it was small class sizes as it afforded alot of individual attention and was more conducive to learning.  The SUNY school - I disliked that classes appeared to be repetitive of undergrad material and professors were more focused/attentive to phd students rather than the masters students.

what kind of job do you hold? I currently work for State OMH in the Bureau of Sex Offender Management and part-time in a private practice providing sex offender psychotherapy

what other jobs did you consider? Since I don't graduate officially until May, Im still considering alot of jobs ... ideally I would like to work as a therapist in a prison, although I do enjoy working with sex offenders. ... I'd LOVE to be an investigator with police, but I dislike the idea of starting as a patrol officer and waiting for a promotion and attending the academy and so forth .... I've also considered Civilian Air Force .... I've also considered working with an agency that focuses on offender/prisoner community re-entry ..... So many options!

  • Got my BS at UI, local university. I double majored in Justice studies and Psychology. I really enjoyed the program, especially the criminal law classes. My big dislike was a research methods class. Since the two majors have different focuses, I had to take a justice focused research methods class as well as a psychology focused research methods class which was super annoying!

Out of college I got a job at a juvenile court as a mentor where I ran community service projects for the youth on diversion. I really liked it, but it was not a full time position and they didn't have anything opening up any time soon.

I moved about a year later and started working at a residential facility for homeless teens. Last year, the agency I work with changed focus and we became a treatment facility for commerically exploited youth. I really love my job, but I'm constantly torn between wanting to stay in the social work field or move into the criminal justice side.
