Forgive me if this is a dumb question and I am being lazy and just asking you instead of trying to look up the answer, but can dogs take children's motrin?

  • Technically yes, they can take it if you give it to them. And it will probably make them feel a little better. BUT it's not recommended since it can negatively effect their kidneys/liver.

  • Ok, in the back of my mind I kept thinking motrin was a no and that baby asprin might be better? My mom's dog is 11 years old and is having hip problems. My mom is making an appointment with the vet, but we were wondering if we could give her anything to help with the pain. She's only walking on 3 legs and isn't moving much and isn't jumping that much anymore. So I was talking to my mom today and she asked if she could give her motrin because it works better for inflammation and I said I would ask you first. Obviously my mom hasn't given her anything for what we assume is pain.

  • I wouldn't give anything. Any human meds for pain/inflammation are bad for dogs. And I especially wouldn't since she's so old. Best to get an rx from the vet. Ask about tramadol, it's cheap, effective, and is nice on kidneys and livers.

Some old school vets will still say baby asprin is ok, but it's not. And I would give them the side eye if they recommended anything like that given her age.

  • Thanks Mar, I knew you would be the best person to ask.
