I'm getting fired!!!

So my boss cut my hours on tues (they took mondays away from me) after they just asked me to pick up every other wed. I told them I couldnt work the 2 wed in Feb cause B has an appt the one wed and surgery the other wed. So she called me into her office to tell me she was taking my mondays away from me, I said ok and left it at that.

So today when I went in I went into her office and asked why they were taking my mondays away since they just asked me to work weds. She said cause Brody is sick and I didnt want to work wed. They are keeping me till they find my replacement cause they dont want my sucky hours (tues&thur 1-7 and every other sat8-1) I am so upset.

What the hell am I supposed to do? Its not my fault my kid is sick and has a chronic illness (In all fairness I even told her this when I interviewed for the job a year ago!!!). And I sure as hell can't let him be alone when he is in the hospital.

Grrrrr.

  • Isn't that illegal?  It's a health issue they shouldn't be able to discriminate against you.

    I would just quit and make them work your hours. LOL.

    Are they going to let you collect unemployment?

  • While I can to a certain extent understand where they're coming from (they need to count on someone being there for their scheduled hours, etc.) they knew when they hired you what the situation was...did you remind them of this during your conversation?  I know you don't really have any recourse since it is a small business, but not very bright of them when they had prior knowledge of your situation.

  • They fired you b/c you couldn't work 2 days that they changed your schedule too?? That is effed up.  I would be hella pissed b/c that wasn't the agreed schedule that you were hired under and now you're being punished for it, and punished b/c your child is sick. so.not.fair!

  • As crappy as it is DO NOT QUIT!! At least try for unemployment when you are let go! If you walk out you are not entitled to anything. You don't call in, you haven't been written up? You should be able to collect. If you won't get much in unemployment then I would probably walk out right now and leave them hanging.

    I second this. If you can try to calculate what you may get on unemployment if you are able to collect and it comes up as hardly nothing, I would just walk out/quit. I'm sorry you have to go through this, on top of everything else going on. People can be so horrible.
