Short Term Housing Options

Hello ladies,

I'm new to this board, my husband and I are originally from RI, but have been living in FL for the last year or so.  He recently received a job offer in Boston, and it looks like we may need to be in the area in early March.

Our hope was that we would have enough time to purchase a home, but now it looks like we will have to spend some time in an apartment.  Does anyone know of any reasonably priced short term housing options in the Boston area? We would be willing to squeeze into a smaller apartment to save money while we house hunt, and ideally would like to not pay more than $1500 / mo.

Appreciate any advice, and looking forward to becoming a Boston Nestie!

-Jessi

Re: Short Term Housing Options

  • Where would your husband be working (i.e. what area)? Also how long do you want your or his commute to be?

That will help us get a better idea :-)

  • He's deciding between two hospitals, but learning towards Mass General (he needs to decide by COB tomorrow, so we'll know soon).  I travel a lot, so proximity to the airport would be great.  About an hour commute would be optimal.  We're hoping to only be in an apartment for a couple of months while we house hunt, so if the commute is a little longer it's not a deal breaker.

Our main concern is to still be able to save some money, and a lot of the short term apartments I've come across were very expensive.

  • Have you tried anywhere in east boston? It would be super close to the airport (we can walk to the terminal from our house), just a few t stops from mass general, and has some of the lowest prices in the city.If you stay close to Maverick it's a nice, safe neighborhood, and you don't even hear the planes even though the airport is so close. I'm not sure about temporary housing, but for price and proximity it would be a great bet. Good luck!

  • don't know if you are strictly looking in boston or would consider commuting from RI . . . but i have a condo for rent in north providence that i would lease short-term.

there is currently a tenant there now but her lease expires at the end of february.

if you are interested, let me know and i can email you some pics so you can see if it would work for you.

    good luck in your search!

  • Hi Jessi,

To let you know, your timing may work out well for you.  The winter is not the optimal time for leasors... May to September is their prime time to lease.  So, anyone trying to rent now may be feeling a little desperate.  Most of them want to get back into the summer rental cycle, so they will most likely be open to a 6 month lease term at this point.

To be realistic about timing for buying the home, you're going to need time to research the areas that you want to live in and then look at houses (with sales, the majority of houses come back onto the market in the spring) For those on the market now, you may be able to get a good deal though, depending... and once you've gotten an accepted offer, it will take at least 60 days to close (on average).

     Just fyi!  hope it's helpful!
