Medical Billers/Coders?

Im in school now for medical billing and coding. Our accrediation for the school is through AHIMA.

When you sat for your test, what test did you take?
CCA, CCS, CCS-P?
Did you find a job right away?
What did you do with it?
What are the Pros/Cons of career?

Did you take any tests for the billing part?
CPAT, CCAT, CPAM?

Re: Medical Billers/Coders?

  • Hi!

I have my CPC, which is the AAPC version . I'm sorry I can't help you with picking which test to take! I would definately start with physican office billing then work your way up!

I found a job right away, but I've worked in a doctors office for over 10 years. I actually went back to my old job after my "coder" job. I personally don't like just coding, and would rather do more billing. I recently just got a promotion into Administration of the offices.

I think billing/coding is the thing to do because you will always have a job, you can do it from home, and the money is decent.

I'm not sure if you are working in health care now, if you are not I would definately get your foot in the door somewhere. You may not find a position as a coder right away, and work yourself up the ladder, but it's your best bet!

  • Hi.
Thanks for responding! I think Im going to take the physcian based test first (CCS-P). Ive been applying all over in different hospitals and no one is even looking at me. I plan to just start cold calling drs offices and see if they want to hire a entry level/student for billing. I am favoring billing as well.
