Where are my Tahoe Girls?

So, we go to South Lake Tahoe every March and this year we decided to mix it up a bit...we're going to North Lake Tahoe.

Those who have been to the North Shore, do you have any recs on where to stay?  Where's the best place to ski/snowboard?  Good places to dine?  Any other tips and recs are really appreciated.

Re: Where are my Tahoe Girls?

  • Hey Deb!

I just went to North Shore last weekend. We stayed at a friends cabin in Kings Beach. The two resorts up there are Squaw Valley and Northstar. Squaw costs a little more (because the Olympics were held there like 100 years ago) but Northstar can get really crowded.

There's a brand new Ritz Carlton at Northstar if you happen to have won the lottery recently. Do you want to stay at the resort, a cabin or a hotel? We're like you guys though, we generally do South Shore since there are more activities to do after all day on the mountain.

  • I've heard of both Squaw Valley and Northstar.  Thre was a commercial for some Cadillac dealership and if you buy a brand new Caddy, you'll get free passes to Northstar...yeah, I'm going to buy one just for that.

We really don't have a preference to where we stay.  A resort would be nice because there would be things for us to do, while a cabin would be nice because it will be cozy.  We just don't want to spend an arm and a leg.

  • Here I am!

If you are a serious border or skier, squaw is for you.  It is far more technical and advanced and where the locals go.  northstar is fancier and geared more for the tourists.  i really liked northstar though (but i was biased, as we lived in the on trial condos and gerren worked there).

if you want to stay at northstar, they have a "hotel" that is part of the village that is far more affordable than the ritz or the hyatt.  otherwise, i would look for rentals or hotels in kings beach, tahoe city or just house rentals in tahoe donner, and sierra meadows.

for places to eat, i would recommend the  ritz at northstar one night, it is worth the money.  you can also do lunch there for a more budget friendly meal.  in truckee is also jalisco's authentic tacos and they are to die for.  $1.50 each.  I have to admit, i lived in truckee and rarely went to tahoe city, so i do not know much about the dining there, but tahoe city has the best shopping, and you cannot beat the view.

for nightlife, downtown truckee has a few bars (you cannot miss them, but "the Tourist Club" or T club for short is the most popular) or you can head over to stateline and hit up the casinos.

let me know if you have any other specific questions!

GIIIIIIRRRRLLLL, ima smack you!  those waffles are to die for!  but they also have them at squaw, not just northstar :)  i LOVE THOSE SUCKERS.

also, another tip if you are at northstar: spend the way too much money on a dirty snowman at the village cabana bars.  they are worth the $12.

  • Northstar is also known as Flatstar Stick out tongue (I've only been on the front side, not back side).

I like Squaw but not their ticket prices - I think it's $90 for a one day..um, yea.

There is also Alpine Meadows, further down the road from Squaw and Sugar Bowl. SB is the closest resort on the way home, although now one of my old boarding buddies tells me he it gets crowded on weekends (he has lived up there for 5 years now). Homewood is nice too, hardly crowded and great views of the Lake.
For food, Rosie's Cafe in Tahoe City is great, a little pricey for breakfast but that place has been there for ages. There is also the Bridgetender Tavern, cute small place that has also been there for a long time.

That's a whole lotta info!  Okay, now I'm looking forward to North Tahoe.  Northstar sounds like it's right up our alley.  I can't board or ski, but Richard likes to board.

I'll check out Tahoe city for cabins and hotels.

The waffles sound super yummy, I want one like now!

  •  The waffles aren't bad...they just smell SOOO good that I was expecting unicorns to explode from my mouth.

Deb, if you don't ride or ski, Northstar would be a fun place. It's centrally located and has a fun ice skating rink with lots of lounge chairs and heaters all around it (with bars serving those delicious Dirty Snowmen that Shauni speaks of). There's also a Starbucks, Mikuni sushi and shopping :)

Leo is right on Squaw, it's beaucoup de bucks, so unless both of you are gung ho about the snow, it may not be worth it.

  • if you will not be skiing at all, then northstar is the place for you.  although price wise, it is probably only slightly ($10?) cheaper than Squaw.  it is pretty flat, but if you want to test your legs on a set of skis or on a board, it is a good place to learn.  if you will be riding at northstar, i would not stay in tahoe city, its a little farther away, i would suggest kings beach (right on the lake) or sierra meadows and then go to tahoe city for a day of shopping and fun!

also, there are two great breakfast places in truckee that have both been featured on the food network: squeeze in (which is very good, but pricey) and my personal fave: Jax.  If you go to Jax, pleae please please get the local favorite, the name of which i cannot remember, but it has hash browns, lettuce, pesto, balsamic, tomatoes, bacon, and eggs on it.  it is so so so good.  and then also there is wild cherries in town (across from the taco place i told you about) and they have the best vegan chili a girl could ever ask for.  if you get it with the works (no longer vegan) it is beyond this world.

  • Hehehe...I just heard a commercial on the radio for Northstar.  I guess it's a sign that I should go there.

  • You must go to there.....

Also, if you go to REI before heading up, they have better deals on lift tickets. We got ours for $71. I'm not sure how much Squaw was.

Man, now I want to go.
