Dibs'd parking spots

Does this happen in any of your cities when it snows?

I remember when I first moved to Chicago how weird I thought this was.  People will shovel out their parking spot on the city street and then "dibs" it with boxes, lawn chairs, etc. to save the spot they shoveled out for their return.

On Wednesday there as a brief segment on the news that 4 of 5 mayorial candidates had saved shoveled spots on city streets.

It's such a funny concept.  We've never done it but then again, we only drive about once a week.

Here are some funny pics:

Re: Dibs'd parking spots

  • Having to shovel a spot on the street for my car to be parked is such a foreign concept to me.  lol  We only have to park in a street spot if we go downtown, which I try to avoid at all costs.  lol

haha lol, true. That'd be nice!  To have a garage parking spot in my neighbhorhood will cost you $150/mo to rent or $20K-$30K to buy!  It's insane
  • Living in Philadelphia, I see it all the time!  Luckily, DH and I have a two car garage with a driveway for any guests that visit, but every time we see lawn chairs or coolers in the street we crack up!
  • That's funny.  Here, someone would just move your "spot-saver".

And here, removing someone's spot saver will get your tires slashed. Or the tires of the poor person who parked there after you removed someone else's spot saver. Seriously.  Spot saving is not for the faint of heart in Boston.  Technically, people are only allowed to  save it for 48 hours, but some people start this (cough*southie*cough) the minute there's a hint of snow in the forecast and continue right through spring.

  • lol, I mean I understand the hard work of digging out a car/spot...but personally I don't think that entitles you call a spot on a city street "yours" by marking/saving it.

  • Here's an article on the parking wars that happen in Southie every winter, as well as a link to a photo of the Elvis bust someone used a couple of winters ago.

    Full contact spot here, seriously.
