One of the reasons that I am looking for a new position is the amount of OT that is required at a moment's notice due to my employers lack of organization.
Basically, my time to be off is 5pm, but often times, I am stuck there until 7pm, and this is just unacceptable with a 2 month old.
I have an interview coming up, and the job posting stated the hours are from 8-4:30pm. This is perfect for me. However it is a similar job (mortgage industry) so I am concerned about the possibility of OT.
How do I approach this subject in an interview without sounding lazy? I want to know if it is a requirement of the job. When they ask me about why I am leaving my employer, what should I say?

"What can you tell me about a typical work day around here? How much is predictable and how much varies on a daily basis?"
"How are crisises handled here? When something comes up that interferes with what was on someone's agenda for the day, does everyone pitch in with an 'all hands on deck' approach, or are things left in a manner that would say, 'well, if it doesn't get done by 4:30, we'll just work on it tomorrow' ?"
This is very hard to predict, because there are industries in which doing OT is considered very normal and understood. I'm not in banking, but mortgages strike me as something that may fall in that category because of all the rushing there sometimes is to meet underwriting deadlines.
But I agree with pp...something along the lines of "What is the typical workday others in my position keep? How are urgent situations handled?" Should do the trick.
As for why you are looking to leave, I would just say you are looking for a work environment that is better suited to your schedule and needs. Good luck.
