best area to stay in Austin?

my DH and I are planning a trip to visit Austin to look at houses/neighborhoods to potential move to, and I'm wondering where's the best place to stay. We'd also like to do some fun stuff while we're there (nice meals, etc), so we'd like to stay in the city, and we'll meet with an agent during the day to view properties. This will be our babymoon so we'll be sans DS. TIA!

Re: best area to stay in Austin?

  • I feel like most of the hotels are downtown or all along the freeway (I-35). There are some in the Arboretum area, too, in case you are looking at neighborhoods on the north side of town. If you want to do Austin-y things, you will probably want to stay downtown.

  • There is a Hilton (or is it Hyatt) that's right off town lake.  Y'all can take a jog (or just a nice walk) around town lake and I guarantee you'll fall in love with Austin.

As far as austin-y things to do, check out austin360.com and they should have suggestions.  I love Chuy's tex mex, or Ztejas for a yummy (affordable) dinner.

  • Do you know what part of town you and/or your husband will be working in? Traffic in Austin can be a bit of a pain, so I'd recommend not living too far away.

Staying downtown is always fun and there's a lot to do. If you're going to be living north, you might want to stay closer up there.

My favorite restaurants are Chuys, Magnolia Cafe, Trudy's and Mighty Fine Burgers. Amy's Ice Creams is a must too!

Hope you have a good visit.

  • Austin has a few boutique hotels that I think would be really fun sans kids.

Ditto Zippity- before y'all go looking around, it'd be best to have a feel for the area in which you are working and then try to stay on that side of town.
