Safe place to Run??

Does anyone know an area around town that is safe to run (ie. sidewalks clear) right now?  I live close to 28th and East Paris and at least part of any of the routes I run are still snow covered.  :(  It actually feels tropical outside right now with the sunshine and 31 degree temp!  I want to take advantage and get a run in- but fear for my life?  Any ideas?

Re: Safe place to Run??

  • People have been notoriously bad about clearing their walks/driveways this year, even before The Big Dump. :( No snow-free suggestions from me, sorry. And I'm a year-round outdoor runner!
  • Hey Erin!  We should run together sometime.  There is a paved trail along Cascade that runs from 36th Street and goes for miles. It's always cleared, but can be a little icy.  You can park at the church on the corner of 36th and Cascade.

  • Hi Mollie!  That is so funny that you said that.  I actually to Cascade Township Park first, hoping its 1 mile loop paved trail would be clear, no luck.  So I drove to Cascade  (town) and ended up parking at Cascade Burton Park and ran along Thornapple River Dr.  That sidewalk is a trail, too, isn't it?  It is a wide sidewalk with pedestrian signs- I remembered seeing it this summer and wondered about it.  It was pretty snowy and icy, but my Yak Trax worked great!  It was nice to get some fresh air!  We should get together for a run since we live close.  I'm not a speed demon and have to work on getting my mileage back up after a long fall/winter hiatus. :)  I hope to start seriously training up for the 25K this May.

  • Yes, the trail runs up Thornapple and all the way down Buttrick.  We actually take the loop when we go for bike rides.  I'm glad you found it.  I definitely don't run fast either and I'm only up to 4 miles at this point. Good for you for wanting to do the 25K.  I have no interest in ever running that far. =)  I just don't have the time to train, either.  But we should definitely go running sometime.

  • I was also going to suggest the Cascade Trail - it's almost always clear!  We live a few minutes away from the actual trail so we'll usually either drive to the church on Cascade and 45th or the shopping complex at Cascade 28th St.

Good luck in your training!  If you're interested, the Grand Rapids Running Club meets for free on Saturday morning at 8am at John Ball Park Zoo.  The routes are usually clear and it's always more fun to run in a big group. :-)  Here's some info on their 25K mentor program.
