Funny Story

I work at a fairly informal firm and we're permitted to wear jeans on Fridays.  I overheard two secretaries at my firm talking about my "Friday" outfit today.  Apparently my sporty look is cute, but they don't think it's professional enough.  I have on jeans, a modest long-sleeved sweater, and black tennis shoes.  Earlier in the day I was wearing a lightweight North Face jacket.  All of my clothing is clean and in good repair.  I find the critique hilarious because they both have visible tattoos, one has a facial piercing, and the other is dating an attorney here.  I think my outfit should be the least of their worries.  This picky little cr*p goes on all day long and you'd think people would just do the job they're paid to do and just leave other people alone.  I try to keep my nose to my work and let the nonstop henpicking roll off my shoulders.

Re: Funny Story

  • This is pretty hilarious, actually. They really have nothing better to do then nitpick?

Good for you!  It does sound petty of them.  We have one lady at our office that is the gossip QUEEN and thinks shes the best dressed (which she does have good taste) but she also has camel toe quite often.  It's bad and hard not to notice!

  • I think not participating in the gossip and back biting makes me a target even more.  Our bookkeeper gets it really bad too, and I can't just get up and leave my cubicle.  At one point I tried to nicely say that the bookkeeper deserves better than the way they treat her.  I wasn't trying to be self righteous or anything, it's just a big problem at our office.  I naively tried talking to the partners at my first review, but they kinda chuckled and the worst offender's boss said, "Don't worry.  She does that to me too."  My jaw dropped a little.  There's a really high turnover rate and I kinda suspect that the way the long-term/cliquey employees get away with murder has something to do with it.  I'm three years in and hoping that the newest crop of people sticks around and doesn't get sucked into the meanness.
  • Wow that is pretty petty!  Our bank is business casual in the winter time and Fridays year round.  I'm not sure why, and no one knows when that ends exactly as the bank is pretty spread out across the state with varying weather patterns.  We occasionally have a casual Friday where we can wear jeans, and there is always a debate as to what kind of shirt is appropriate.  Like you, I usually wear jeans, with a nice sweater and nice, dressy tennis shoes.   Yesterday though we were allowed to wear Steelers jerseys/t-shirts (we're a PA company with the headquarters in the Pittsburgh area).  I just wore jeans and a nice sweater like usual.

They're truly the models of professionalism themselves, huh?

  • People in my office really are WAY too casual on casual Fridays, but I certainly don't bring it up. Mind you, it's 100 degrees plus in the summer, but denim shorts are never office appropriate.Indifferent
