Bri or anyone who knows about pets...HELP

Our dog Lily (american bulldog) is a MESS.  She sheds like a beast--when I say she sheds, I don't think you understand what I mean.  I mean that when I pet her, my entire sleeve is covered in her short white hair.

I have done a de-shedding treatment at Camp Bow Wow for her and that helped her to not shed as much (I'd say it reduced her to normal shedding for a short hair dog) for a day.  ONE FREAKING DAY.

I vacuum every single day.  And every single day, my floor is covered in hair.  To where there is no break in the flooring--every inch of where she's at (living room mostly) is furry.  It is disgusting.  I am no clean freak, but vacuuming every day is a MUST--sometimes twice a day if I want to live in my own house without being disgusted.

She gets constant ear infections (yeast).  We are in the vet's office constantly.  She clears up in her ears within a day or two of the ear meds, but it doesn't solve the problem because an infection is back within a week.  I've done olive oil pills (from the vet) to kill the yeast in her stomach to try to get the yeast from redepositing in her ear.  Doesn't work.

She's been on NuVet tablets (which claim all types of wonder for dogs with issues) for four months and there's been no change.  I feed her Taste of the Wild salmon (vet said that salmon is the best for allergy issues) and it didn't help at all. (This is just one of the high quality foods we've tried in her 3 years of life...we've done Nature's Variety, Canidae, etc...all high starred foods)

I am now considering switching her to a completely grain free/raw diet.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Or at least experience with a dog that sheds excessively?  A bath once a week and daily brushing isn't even touching it.  I am about to lose my mind.  She's the sweetest dog, and we are both miserable!

  • I am willing to post this on the Pets board if no one knows what to do and thinks it would be best to post there...I'm desperate.

  • I would post on PETS, they really know their stuff. Have you ever considered a second opinion? I am now a strong believer in second opinions with vets since my kitty died from a Vet error. Now, of course in your case it isn't a life/death situation, but a serious one! I would see what another vet says and suggests. I would think this problem could be fixed or at least eased somehow.

I'll probably ask about raw diet on pets. She's seen three different vets for the same problem and each of them told me it's allergies.

  • I know a lot of people on the Pets board do raw diets. But they do know their stuff--I would definitely ask. Since you're not planning on giving up your dog, I think you're safe from flaming. Wink

  • my Lab has allergies I now make her special food as I call it but now all 3 of my dogs are on the same thing it helps with allergies. I just buy a whole chicken and cook it with carrots and green beans all healthy food. Its really helped her in the long run. As for ear infections I dont know much about that one sorry.
