A big step for DH

The doctor told us it would be 2-3 weeks before we saw any improvements from his medication. I know I've said something recently, but he is (and we are) doing a lot better.

He hasn't spent time with friends in months or even really left the house for anything other than work or to go to either of our parents' houses. Well, this evening he and a few friends are going to Buffalo Wild Wings to watch the UFC fights (or something like that)! And the kicker is... HE called them! I am so stinking happy. This is a huge leap for him. I finally feel like I'm getting my old Greg back. Big Smile We spent the whole day together today, he actually asked me to go on a family grocery shopping date tomorrow morning. It almost feels like a new relationship again.

ETA: It's been about a month since he started his medication.

We actually cleaned the house together this morning. I know we have a long way to go but I am so happy he's trying.

  • That's good news! Has the doctor recommended combining the meds w/ talk therapy? It's a step in the right direction if there anyone he can talk to. Then maybe he'll learn how to talk to you about his feelings.

This, when my sister was being treated for her bipolar she had to have at least monthly meetings with her doc.  I'm glad things are going well.

  • He's seeing his doctor monthly for the first few months  to see how the medication is working for him and can call to make an appointment at any time if he feels he needs more than once per month. I'm not sure about after that.

I know from being on meds for panic disorder/anxiety that these "check ins" are only 15-20 min.  You really need to see someone in addition to the person monitoring the meds.

I am glad that the meds are working well for him.  Hopefully this will be a good first step for you guys and now the real work can begin.  Having someone who is in the right frame of mind is definitely a good start.  But I am glad things have finally turned a corner for you.

  • This is a huge step!  I'm so proud of him. :)

I agree with PP that at this stage, a psychologist or counselor in addition to a psychiatrist is important.  I'm treated for bipolar disorder and anxiety.  When I first started taking medicine, I saw the doctor for maybe 20 minutes once a month, but saw the counselor for an hour once a week.

Eventually I got to the point where I had learned enough tools from the counselor to cope without her, and once you're stable with a medication you may only need to go once every three months for medication management appointments.

  • So glad to hear that he is making progress on the meds and seems to be heading in the right direction. I hope things continue to improve.
