Would you sign up for a cc to get free airline tickets?

If we sign up for a SW cc, we can get two free roundtrip airline tickets.  Considering we will be flying SW to Phoenix in May and then SW again in November...I am kind of thinking this is a good idea..................but sometimes big-time free stuff tends to cloud my judgement.

What do you think?

Re: Would you sign up for a cc to get free airline tickets?

  • I wouldn't do it. I'd bet there are probably a lot of hoops to jump through to get the tickets you actually want (and probably lots of stopovers on the way), and plus, it's just another credit card to have to deal with.

You just gasped in surprise at my answer, didn't you? ;)

  • I wouldn't do it. Pretty much for every reason bluekid said.

  • I would do it with plans to cancel later.
  • Considering how much we travel, I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to cancel our BOA Visa and have this SW airlines one instead....
  • I've been tempted to do it before, but not tempted enough. My main problem is paying the annual fee after the first year (I think it's $49/year for SW). Are the rewards beyond the introductory free flights work the fee? My current credit card gets decent rewards with no annual fee.

We are looking at that.  We go to Phoenix or LV every year Memorial Weekend - those flights are usually around $600 total.  So, the $50 fee would be worth it.

  • My dad has a SW card and earns a crap-ton of free flights on it - BUT he "cheats".  He owns an auto repair shop and uses that card to pay a bunch of his parts suppliers - then pays the card off.  Earns multiple free trips every year - and he fly's all the time.

Also - not only do you get the free trips - but i'm pretty sure there are other perks for cardmembers.

All that being said - I would only do it if you are responsible with your CCs and pay if off each month.  The promo says nothing about the interest rate...... And of course - dont apply if you plan on making a major purchase in the near future (house, car, etc).

     <running back into lurker-status>  :)

  • Agree with Bri. Would do it with plans to cancel later, unless we end up switching it to our main CC.
