Put my 2 weeks in...

So after working for a company for 5 years I just put my 2 weeks notice in that I was leaving. In this 5 year time frame I have acquired 14days of vacation. Is it wrong to ask if I can cash out those earned days? If they say they can't do that would it be wrong to ask if I could take a couple days off before I go?

It just sucks loosing vacation time that I earned and won't be able to use. Even going to a new job I just can't take time off (maybe at the end) but not when I'm just starting out.

Any advice would be great

Re: Put my 2 weeks in...

  • I think you are making a good choice. only 14 days of vacation in 5 years? That's terrible! I would ask if they could pay you for those days.
  • I agree too ... try to cash them in and if not then ask to take some days off.

  • I would check with HR to see if there's a policy. Usually they have some sort of policy as to how it's handled.

I would have found out the policy before putting in notice and taken time off before then.

I got the impression that this was 14 days left over/accrued, not that she only got 14 days (almost 3 weeks) of vacation in 5 years. In fact, the fact that she's able to carry it over and not 'use it or lose it" in a year is pretty good, too.

Three weeks a year of vacation is pretty standard, i would think.

OP - ask HR about what the policy is about paying out unused vacation.

  • Actually I only gain 2 days per year I am there. So I started out with 3 vacation days when I started and then every year after I got 2 days added on. So yeah over the course of 5 years I earned 15 days but already took a day off for the interview.

The new job I earn hours so basically if I don't take any time off at the end of the year with the new job I have 15 days .

  • I don't see why they wouldn't pay it out...especially that you are giving notice.  Isn't there something in your employee handbook that addresses this?
