if you could change something...
..in your home (that's acutally change-able) what would it be? Let's pretend like you had a 5k(ish) budget.
If you can, post your "current" photo - and an inspiration photo, too. PIP is always more fun.

I would change the flooring. I'm over the white carpet and we haven't even been in the house for a year. The tile in some places in just ok in my opinion. I really want new floors. I think I would do something like this (sorry, can't PIP):

We are on our second house that we've built where I've been able to choose majority of the finish-out. The biggest change I made in this house from the last is a more bold palette. I went pretty beige-beige with little standout last time. This new house has dark brown marble accents in the master bath, a much bolder tile pattern throughout the house and oil-rubbed bronze fixtures and hardware.
So if I had $5k to upgrade my house, it'd go towards the design center.

Well the next thing on our "to do list" is replace our countertops. I want to replace our yucky white corian with light colored granite or silestone. I'm hoping this will actually happen in the next couple of months.
That "hopefully" will not be 5K so if I really had that, I would hire someone to repaint our kitchen/dining room/gameroom. We painted it when we first moved in and I really do not like the color, but it would be a huge undertaking to repaint now

I know this isn't what you asked for, specifically, but my big upgrade on top of the "essentials" was 20" Marrazzi tile. I feel like it makes a difference in the overall feel of the home. You should pick at least one thing that you upgrade for emphasis.
These are the colors I chose for this house:
L to R: Tile, office floors, carpet, walls, kitchen counters, cabinets, bathroom tile and fixtures.
And the master bath accent- you can kinda see the shower opposite the tub that has the same brown marble accent.
I would ditto the upgraded flooring - builder's carpet sucksass, or at least the crap that was in our house did.
others might not agree, but I would also not put wood in the kitchen - I've spilled more things than I'd like to admit and the wood would probably get ruined pretty quickly.
