AW: It's an exciting day at LFES!

There's a family of whooping cranes hanging out behind my school today! Like 8 of them. They're just wandering around the big open field, have been since about 9 this morning. I took the kids out to see, and they thought it was the coolest thing ever! (Although, they didn't understand my Elmur Fudd "be vewy vewy quite" joke.) I wish I could upload pics to my school computer. I'm eating lunch and watching them through my window now. Anyway, it's made for an exciting Monday. I'll stop being an AW now.

  • Could you perhaps make paper cranes in school and do a less on origami or something.

I think that big birds are fascinating.

  • Ohh I hadn't even thought about whopping cranes being a symbol of luck! I did choke down my first Clomid yesterday.

Smo- I wanted to do 1,000 paper cranes at Christmas last year, because they're also a symbol for peace and I thought they'd look really cool hanging in the hall on fishing line. Have you ever tried to make a paper crane? We do some oragami in my class, but I worked on that damn crane for about 2 hours (and about 10 pieces of oragami paper) and then gave up. I did use today's "teachable moment" to pull up some pictures of whooping cranes and talk about where they live and what they're doing here.

When I was 12 or 13 I made 700 paper cranes... I had heard about that legend/story where the girl made 1000 and her wish was granted. I was wishing my lost cat would be found- and at 700 and something, he showed up, so i stopped.

But I still strung up 7 strands of 100 cranes each and hung them around my bedroom, and they do look really pretty. I made them out of used wrapping paper.

Yep. I learned when I was in the 3rd or 4th grade in our library class. I've always remembered how to do it. Like riding a bike I guess. They takes just a few minutes after you get the hang of it. Don't give up! Maybe check for a tutorial where the paper colors are really opposite on either side, gray and white, or red and blue. It might help. Did you use a picture guide, or a have a person show you? It mike make a difference. I'd check out some Youtube videos if you've only had the 2D version from a book.

When we got bored in church growing up, we'd make them. haha.

Oooh I remember a lesson we did like in 5th grade I think on crane origami. The lesson was based on a book ...I *think* it was "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes".

Obviously made a big impression on me if I still remember it :)

Yep. That's the one! Maybe I should read them the book and then give the option of making paper cranes if they want. Cranking out 1,000 just wasn't going to happen as fast as I thought.

Also, excuse my spelling today. I'm embarassing myself. Maybe I should proofread before I click post.

  • Ok, now y'all are just embarassing me. Everyone learned when they were like 10, and I (in my 26 years of glory) couldn't figure it out! Embarrassed My visual spatial skills are lacking. I'm really much more of an auditory-sequential learner. Maybe a video would help.

I would try a video. It really helps to see the paper in the hand of someone else.

What a great story for your kids though, you learned successfully using different resources and teaching methods.
