s/o shoes: where is a REALLY good place to get fitted?

i'm having issues with numbness both in step class and when i run on the treadmill. i'm fairly certain it's because my shoes don't fit right.

i think i probably need 2 different kinds of shoes: 1 for aerobics and 1 for running. does anyone know of a place where there are experts who can help fit me for shoes and who might know when i describe what is going on what a possible fix might be?

i've had hit and miss experiences at the uptown Running Room so i'm not sure i want to go there.

other ideas?

  • Schulers Shoes. I know the Bloomington (Southtown) location has a New Balance "store" inside of the regular Schulers store. Don't know if they are all that way or not. They have traveling podiatrists, with a schedule on their website, and I would suggest going to a store when the podiatrist will be there. They were fantastic, found me some great solutions for my foot problems (high arches, small but wide feet) and I suggest them to everyone now.

THIS is awesome news and just what i was looking for Anita. Thank you! I was actually thinking, "do i just go see a podiatrist?" : )

  • I thought they have a podiatrist - but I guess it's a pedorthist. Regardless, I am happy with how they were able to help me.

  • I second Schulers.

  • I actually went to the Running Room (2 locations) and didn't have any luck.  Mostly because I seemed to get young kids who really didn't have any idea what to suggest for me and juststared at me.

I went to Schuler Shoes in Edina when the dr was there so he could look at my foot.  The shoes he suggested hurt when I ran and I still ended up with numb toes after about 15 minutes of working out.

Peterson's Shoes in Anoka suggested one style of shoe then an insert that pads the ball of my foot to stop the numbness and it's helped somewhat.

Marathon Sports on Penn & 50th in Mpls is rated the #1 shoe fitting store in the cities.  I went there and they recommended yet another shoe, but didn't have it in my size.  They sent me back to Schuler to get the shoe and when I went back there the lady told me that he fit my foot wrong and he didn't know what he was talking about.

All this in the matter of 48 hours.  So I ordered the same New Balance shoe from Zappos and put the insert in it.  I still get toe numbness now and then.  If I had to suggest a store, it would be Marathon Sports.  They seemed the most knowledgable and didn't try to sell me a shoe that didn't fit just for the sale.

  • I forgot to say that Marathon Sports also has several different kinds of drs who rotate in on various days to help fit shoes.  If you check the website I think they list when they come to the store and what they specialize in.

  • I've been to the Running Room in Burnsville to be fitted for running shoes.  The shoes I got there were perfect.  I haven't had any problems with shin splints since I got fitted.

  • FWIW - DH is clinically flat footed and has to get orthotics  (sp??) for his shoes.  His podiatrist sent him to Schuler to get shoes that would work with his feet and orthotics.
  • I highly recommend Marathon Sports in South Minneapolis/Bloomington. They are awesome. They got me fitted with a shoe I love and have re-ordered over and over again. Same with my boyfriend. Love them!
  • I took my grandma to Schuler ... she has a really hard time finding shoes as her feet have bad arthritis problems. The sales person at Schuler was awesome. She was very knowledgeable and was super patient with my rather difficult grandma (grandma also has alzheimers and gets very confused, so she can be rather unreasonable to work with). My grandma was pretty crabby during her visit to Schuler, but she's been very happy with the shoes she got there, and has even gone back to get other pairs. The employees there have all been wonderful every time she's been in. If they can help my grandma, I'm convinced they could help anyone :-)
