How old were your parents?

I've always been sort of proud of my parents for the job they did raising me, as they were super young when they had me.  My mom turned 18 about a week and a half after I was born.  My dad didn't turn 18 for 8 more months after that.  But they both finished high school, had jobs, got married, had an apartment that they paid for, etc.  And they bought their first house the month before my dad turned 20.

When I started 5th grade (and they weren't even 30 yet) they were able to put me into private catholic school (with no tuition assistance) and kept me in private catholic school all the way through.

I'm now 34 years old and can't even fathom what that must have took for them.

I DO often wonder how different my life would have been if they had waited 10 or 15 years to have me.  I think about how STRANGE it will be to me, to have a small child when I'm in my late 30's (hopefully).  That concept is just so foreign.  Even my aunt who "waited" to have her kids, was 25 and 27 when she had them.  And that was UP THERE for my family.  It's so weird to think about that and the fact that that way of thinking was less than 30 years ago.

My Grandma was 37 when I was born.  Keith just turned 36 last Wednesday.  How bizarre.

Re: How old were your parents?

  • Well, my parents have late summer birthdays (August and September). So my dad will tell you he was 23 when he got married (in June) but he was really 22 and my mom was 24. They were almost 23 and 25.

They waited almost 3 years to have me (birthday in May), so they were 25 and 27.  My brother is just over 3 years younger than I am.

My mom's mom was almost 51 when I was born, but she died 3 years later. My dad's parents were 6 and 66, but they also have birthdays later in the year. They were a little older when my dad was born (my grandfather had just turned 41).

Currently my FIL is 69, so my kids will definitely have old grandparents.

FWIW, I'm 28 now. My dad's mother got married at 18, so I guess I'm, uh, behind. And we're not having kids for a while.

  • My mum and dad were both 34 when I was born.  My dad's parents were 34 and 44 when he was born.  My grandfather--if he had survived--would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2005.

  • My mom was 24 and my dad was 35 when my mom had me.  My mom was only 20 when they got married.

And I feel like we got married young!  I'm 26 and Jon just turned 28 last month. We're definitely old by our parents standards.  Both of our moms are dying for grandkids, but they'll have to wait a few more years.

  • My parents were young too.  My mom was 19 when she had me and my dad was 21.  They were married and got pregnant just after my mom graduated high school.  By the time my sister was born two years later, they were seperated and getting ready for a divorce.  I grew up split between two homes and turned out well.

  • My Mom was 35/36 when she had me, but I'm the youngest of three and my sisters are 9 and 11 years older so my mom had her first when she was 25 and my dad was 28.

DH's mom and dad got married at 21 and had DH at 22 (he's the oldest).

As for grandparents, I don't really know his family's history there but on my dad's side his mom was 35 when she had him which for the 1940s was pretty late in life (she was my grandfather's 2nd wife and my grandfather was in his 40s). I don't have many good memories of my grandfather; he died when I was 5.

  • Mom was 32, dad was 33. They got married in their early 20's and waited 10 years before I came along. Mom practically threatened dad's life before they started trying, saying "I only want one, and I only want a girl, so you better do this right!" Viola, here I is. Only child, and if the health teacher told us right, a girl. Go dad!
  • My dad was 31 and my mom was 30.  I was the third child, and the baby for 10 years.  I have a sister 2 1/2 years older then me and another 5 1/2years older, so they had their first kid when my mom was 24. When my mom was 42 they had my little sister, and then my brother was born when she was 44.

  • My mom and dad were 19 and 20 when they got married and then 21 and 22 when they had me.  If that were me, I'd have a 14 year old!

  • Mom was a month shy of 29 and dad was a month shy of 30.  I am the first.  They were married for 6 years before they had me and waited another 6 to have my sister, so almost 35 and 36 with her.

I'm a little ways behind them since I will be 30 this year, but I won't be waiting 6 years to have my 2nd, God willing.

  • My parents were 27 and 28 when they married, and I came around 10 months later (I'm 25), then 3 more girls over the next 9 years.

DH' parents were both 22 when they married, then DH was born about a year and a half later (he's 31), then 2 more kids over the next 6 years.

We probably won't start TTC for another 2-5 years (I'd like to be on the downhill of my phd work).  and apparently we're the slow ones.  Like Tisha said, I can't imagine being in (especially) DH's parents shoes at our age.

  • My parents married at 21/22 and had me at 22/23.  DH's mom had him at 17 but his parents were married before he was conceived (I think there was a miscarriage before him) I think his Dad was 24.  We are 29/40 so we definitely started late but his brother and SIL are 35/37 and expecting their first so I still have 8 years right?  We're hoping for next spring so we'd be 30/41 which does seem late to me

  • My parents were 33 when I was born.  That is probably about the same time we will be having our first kid.  Drives me a little nuts when my mom compares me to her in that respect!

  • My mom was 19 the first time she got married. She was also seven months pregnant (with me). He was the same age. They had two more kids over the next three years. Then Mom divorced him .about a year after that... I had just turned 4. She was 23.

She struggled as a single mom with three little ones. Times were tough... I remember that.

She got remarried at 29. Things started to look up. But it was still tight. He had three kids of his own (they are the same ages as the three of us) and we all became fast friends. About two years later, he adopted the three of us.

My parents are wonderful and set a great example. I can't wait to follow in their steps!

But by the precedent they set, I'm damn near old!

The consoling factor is my Grandma. She was 35 when she had my mother.

  • My parents were 31/32 when they had me, They got married in 76 were high school sweethearts, I'm the youngest of four, the oldest is 10 years older then me so they started when they were 22/23. were not looking to have any little ones for maybe another 5 years or so...maybe longer...

  • My mom was 24 and my dad was 26 when they had me. The got married when they were 21 and 23, and on their HM got pregnant with my brother. Nothing like starting early.

A couple years later they popped me out.

  • My parents were 29/30 when they had me.  I was actually due a day before my mom's 30th bday, but was 13 days early (so my bday is exactly 2 wks before my moms).

However, when my dad was 20, he and his gf at the time got pregnant (well obviously just the gf), so doing "the right thing" they got married, but divorced within a year of the marriage, after my half-brother was born.

My parents actually met b/c my mom was teaching at a Montessouri (sp) school that my dad took my brother to.  She turned him down twice until she agreed on a date the 3rd time.

My parents were married at 27/28 and had me 2 years later.

It's funny b/c growing up, I remember thinking several times that I didn't want to be "old" like my parents and wanted to start TTC at 26.  My "plan" always was married at 24 (which I did) and be a mom at 26.  Now the later is something I'm definitely not ready to fulfill just yet.

  • My mom was 25 going on 26 when she had me and my dad was 36. My brother was born 18 months before me.

I was informed on Saturday at my brother's graduation party that I HAD to have a baby when said what if we don't want one. I guess I'm on the old-ish scale since I'll be 34 in July.

  • We were 49 when we got married and do not plan on kids.

My mom was 36 when I was born and Dad was 38. I am the last of 4 kids with a 10 year spread. Both my parents were the babies of their families.

My Maternal grandparents: grandfather was born in 1881, so he was 80 when I was born. He lived to be 93 I think. Maternal grandmother was a few years younger but died when I was in grade school.

My Fraternal grandparents: Grandfather was born late 1880's so was about 77 when I was born and lived to be 93/94. I was around 16 when he died. Grandmother was born in 1890 and lived to 1990. So she was 71 when I was born.

DH: His parents married when they were in college and he was born that same year. So his parents were early 20's. His grandmother (maternal) was late 30's when he was born. When he met my mom he compared her to his grandmother as they are just a few years apart. I met his grandmother once a couple of years ago. She has since passed.

DH and I both had very different upbringing based on the age of our parents. My parents had survived the great depression so i was taught to reuse as much as possible. He grew up in a more disposable environment.

  • Mine married at 20 and 22 and had my brother when they were ages 21 and 23. I came along four years later, when they were 25 and 27. They had been married for a month shy of 29 years when my mom died in 1997.

Bryan's parents also were married at 20 and 22 and he was a honeymoon baby. His mom had turned 21 and his dad was still 22.

We are 37 and 31. I remember when my mom turned 36 and I remember my dad's 40th party very clearly ... and now my brother is 41! Crazy.

  • My parents were both 18 when I was born, they were both turning 19 later that year. They got married 1 month and 13 days before I was born, they just celebrated their 25th Anniversary in December and I turn 25 on Saturday. They had my sister 5 years after me. So I would have 2 kids right now and one would be going into kindergarten. That is so crazy to think about!

    Great post, thanks Tisha!!
