I love the new siggy!  ADORABLE!

What settings do you use to get shots like that?  I've got the Nikon D40.  Any advice on how I could stage that to play around with would be great.

Re: ***Hound***

  • I'll give you a nice thoughtful response later today or this evening. I'm about to head out to take Jake to the pedi because he's been covered in hives since Saturday afternoon and he's still getting more and then I have my 6 week check up later today, can't believe it's been 6 weeks already!
  • The photo of Jake was taken with a 35mm lens at f/2.2 1/160 ISO 500. The photo of Audrey was shot with a 50mm lens at f/1.4 1/250 ISO 200. They were both taken in the same location in my living room on different days, so your settings will depend on the amount of light. (I also used a speedlight as a fill light in both).

Do you just have the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 that would have come with the D40? I'm not sure how much you know about camera settings. But if you wanting the blurred background in the photo of Audrey, the lower the aperture the more blurred the background will be and the closer you are to your subject also affects that (and how far the blanket is back behind the subject also like in that photo). You will only be able to get down to f/3.5 at 18mm with that lens, I would not suggest trying to get up close to your subjects face at 18mm because you will get distortion. Just play around and see what you can do, but try and do it in a very bright area so that you don't have to use the pop up flash.

In the photo of Jake the background is seamless paper with plexi glass. You would have to have an editing program to do that because there is a line where the back edge of the plexi glass is.

    Did that help at all?

  • Can I but in and ask where you get your paper backgrounds from? I've been looking for different things and wasn't sure where the best place to get them is. I also want to say I love the headband that Audrey is wearing!! So cute!

  • You can buy seamless paper from amazon, B&H or Adorama. You have to shop around for the best deal (with shipping) and the rolls of paper work best if you have a back drop stand. I'll warn you now, the paper itself is not that expensive but the shipping is pricey.
  • and you should request a color sample chart from savage before purchasing anything, the colors online can be totally different from how they look when you get them and your editing also determines what shade the paper will be
