My boss needs a good glitter punch!

This is obviously a vent!

As you all know, I was home for four days last week because of the weather as was most of the population of North Texas.  We've always been told by our HR that as long as your school district is closed you can stay home.  We never get calls/e-mails/whatever saying the office is closed.  Finally back at work today and my boss is telling us that HR said those four days must be taken as sick time!  Excuse me....what?!  I only get 10 days a year of sick time and I've already taken three because, well because I WAS SICK.  So now here it is the beginning of February and I only have three sick days left for the next 11 months.  I know it's pretty common to be "charged" for snow days, but we were never told that by staying home we'd be using our sick days.  In fact, previous years (I checked old time sheets) we were not charged sick days for the one or two snow days we had.  Our employee handbook only says that the days will be paid, but not how.  This really sucks!  And we're forecast to have more rain/snow on Wednesday!

  • Yikes! That is not cool at all! I would deifnitley be questioning this! They should have warned you if they were changing their policies from previous years.... not telling you this after the fact.

  • I think you should talk to HR about this.  They need to figure this one out in a way that doesn't screw over the employees.

And, I'm on my way with a big fat glitter punch. Just point me in the right direction when I get there.

  • If that policy was changed, they should have let everyone know. I would bring it up to your boss or HR. That's something you should be given a heads up about.

  • That's ridiculous. Were you given a choice of risking your life in the ice and traffic, or stay home? Not cool. And they definitely cannot change the policy without telling you before hand so you have the choice.
  • That's just the thing.  Who do I complain to when it's HR that is saying that we have to use our sick time?  HR is saying this is nothing new, that we've always had to use sick time, but no one here has ever heard that before. I (we) are just plain screwed since we've already taken the time.  And that's the part that pisses me off the most, we were never given a choice!

  • Yikes, totally not cool, and it stinks you have no one to complain to.
  • Ugh!!! That sucks!!!!

I found out Thursday that being gone on Wednesday is unexcused. Being tardy would have been, but not coming in at all counts against you. What was I supposed to do? Walk 2 miles to the highway and hope someone picked me up???
