Resume question

I'm updating my resume for my new job search (yay!) and I realized I haven't had to do this since I graduated law school. I have my education listed at the top followed by experience, but I feel that since I've been working for a few years perhaps experience should come first? Does it matter?

Re: Resume question

  • I've continued to leave my education at the top especially since you have an undergrad and a law school to list. However I'm obviously not too knowledgeable about your field.
  • Mine is sectioned like this:

    Experience

    Education

    Honors/Professional Associations

    Computer Skills

Mine was just updated for a job interview I went on 2 weeks ago! :)  Good luck!!!

I agree with this. Your experience is usually what sets you apart from others. I would guess most everyone in your profession would have a degree, but not everyone has had the same job and responsibilities you have. Good luck!!

  • Definitely experience first. Education first is mostly for recent grads who don't have experience yet. It's also good to have a professional summary at top, right under your name/contact info: "Established legal professional with more than 5 years experience litigating blah blah blah...".  Also, list some accomplishments under your experience instead of just listing job tasks.

I've been working with a friend who's an expert on resumes over the last few weeks as I've been overhauling mine, for the first time in 10 years, so these are the tips I was given.

  • I agree that your experience should come first.  I also like Lori's suggestion about the professional summary.

  • Typically when I do resume's or help people with theirs, I put education at the bottom. At this point, you are probably going to be considered for a job based on your work experience, as your education already got your foot in the door.

    Good luck!
