I'm trying to find out some information on what I will be able to collect when out on maternity leave. How does the whole process work and where do I even begin? I know I have a ways to go but trying to plan ahead & feeling overwhelmed. Any help is appreciated- Thanks!

Re: Maternity Leave
Find out if your company pays into the Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) in RI. I work for the federal government, which does not pay into TDI, so I get nothing when I'm out on maternity leave.
To qualify for Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), you need to be working for your employer for 52 weeks, and the company must have more than 50 employees in the state. It is completely unpaid, but I think it's 13 weeks like PP said, but they must hold your job for you if they meet the criteria. Some companies require that you use up all of your sick leave and vacation time before you start the unpaid portion, but that is company dependent. HR should be able to tell you whether or not they'll make you use up all of your paid leave or not.
Thanks! Both of my paychecks do have a SDI contribution which I'm pretty sure means that I would qualify for TDI- correct me if I'm wrong. As far as the FMLA: my FT job only has 5 employees and PT job has less than 50 so I don't believe that I qualify for that. I will check with my bosses(no HR dept.) to see if there's any compensation but don't believe so. So as far as the TDI is there a formula for me to figure out roughlly how much I will be able to collect? Can I call and ask or is that not something they can tell you?

Your weekly benefit rate will be equal to 4.62% of the wages paid to you in the highest quarter of your Base Period. Your weekly benefit rate remains the same throughout your benefit year. Effective 7/1/10, $69.00 is the minimum and $700.00 is the maximum benefit rate for claims with the benefit year begin date of 7-4-10 or greater. This does not include dependency allowance. If you have dependent children less than 18 years of age, you may be entitled to a dependency allowance. Handicapped children over 18 may also be counted toward the allowance. The dependency allowance is limited to 5 dependents and is equal to the greater of $10 or 7% of your benefit rate. Your dependency allowance is determined at the start of your benefit year and remains the same for the entire period.
ha, that's exactly I thought when I read it, jibberish!!
could they make it anymore confusing to figure it out? yes i think you've got the calculation correct. and, the newborn does not count toward the dependency allowance. i thought it would too, but it did not. see this part:
"Your dependency allowance is determined at the start of your benefit year and remains the same for the entire period."
Thank you again! I'm grateful for any money I can collect while out.
