pregnancy question

So right now I haven't popped at all, which I'm quite happy with, I'd like to remain in my regular clothes as long as possible! And as of my appt. last week, I haven't gained any weight since my first appt. at 7 weeks.

However, I feel so fat and pudgy. I have no clue how I haven't gained any weight, but my pants are getting tighter in the waist, my chest is getting huge, and I just feel like, blah. I kind of wish I'd pop so I wouldn't feel self conscious about the somewhat-muffin top I have now.

Is this normal for 15-16 weeks? It's a really icky feeling and I'm sort of depressed about how I look/feel. I know I'm going to gain weight, and I'm trying to make sure it's healthy weight b/c I don't want to throw away my weight loss, but yuck :( I could use some words of encouragement, advice, and wisdom ;)

Re: pregnancy question

  • When I was pregnant with Chase, I didn't look pregnant until about 20-21 weeks, I just looked fat =(.  I did get bloated and felt like a whale, but I lost weight through out the entire pregnancy. Looking back at pictures.... MAN, I was BIG!  This pregnancy, I popped a bump at 11 weeks...  no one told me about that =(  And it isn't a pretty bump thanks to the previous c section.

I know you eat healthy.  You have done so well with all of your weight loss, but you'll do great! One morning you're going to wake up and look in the mirror and see the cutest bump and your mind set will change from there.  You have a bun in your oven and it isn't all joyous moments, but I promise you when that bump pops, mixed in with the kicks and rolls of baby, you're gonna love it! (and hate it ;))

  • Don't worry Ash. I felt the same way and I think for the most part it was in my head. Speaking from experience because I also lost a lot of weight like you, I know how hard it was to gain the weight because I was so afraid of getting back to where I used to be after working so hard.

I gained 30lbs but 20 of it came right off in the first 3 weeks and I have to say right now I feel uglier than I did when I was pregnant because I have no time to exercise anymore and to me that feels weird. I really feel that because I exercised during my pregnancy, it helped me to gain weight the healthy way and it'll probably be the same for you if you continue to exercise. Don't overdo it though. I know we both at pretty strict exercise regimes before getting pregnant but I had to cut it down to 30-45 mins on the elliptical and cut out any of the Jillian DVDs because all that impact jumping and such is not advised. I know for a fact you are going to look cute pregnant and as long as you eat healthy and are smart about your decisions, you'll be just fine.

Don't forget, you are gaining weight for the health of your baby. I had a friend who gained about 5-10lbs total during her pregnancy and the dr. was very concerned - she said that she didn't want to get fat - it really annoyed me because you do what you have to do for your child!

  • Thanks, Caroline!

I am still exercising, I switched from running to power-walking on the treadmill for 30-45 minutes per day about 6 days a week. I'm finding that vegetables still make me sick, so I'm trying to eat lots of fruit, whole grains and veg. protein like yogurt and cottage cheese. But I just feel weird not eating any veggies (except canned pumpkin, helps with the nausea)

I think right now I'm just getting lots of bloat, which is making me feel like a pudgy whale... it's lovely. My doctor said she'd like for me to gain no more than 20 since i'm still 20 overweight, which sounds great for me from what I've read in What to Expect as far as the actual weight of all things baby. I took my scale out of the bathroom, so I'm not even going to pay attention to my weight, I just hate feeling so heavy! But like you said, it's what's best for the baby, so that's priority #1!

  • I didn't eat a whole lot of veggies either as they made me sick too and Lucie seems perfectly healthy to me so don't worry about that too much! What I did like was the V8 Fusion juice. It's not as nasty as the plain veggie juice and tastes just like fruit juice but it has a serving of veggies in there too.  How is the sickness doing? Any better?
  • Ohh, I'll have to get some of that! I've been LOVING smoothies, so maybe I'll blend it with some ice and yogurt and see how it is. I've been spending far too much at Smoothie King!

M/s is getting much better! I'm still a little nauseous in the morning and at night, but as long as I eat a little bit every hour or two and take my Zofran, I seem to be okay. I'm finally feeling excited about the baby, and a little bit more myself (cooking, cleaning, staying up past 8pm... lol)

  • I only gained about 18lbs total with Emmy. I was losing weight the first few times I went to the doctor. They werent too concerned because I had bad nausea and I was trying to eat better so those two things contributed.

I didnt pop until 22 weeks I think. I didnt even feel pregnant, I don't think I looked any different for most of my pregnancy until I really popped later on.

  • I am definitely in the 'fat' camp. I just feel fat not pg, LOL. My pre-pg clothes are either tight or don't fit so I'm wearing loser styles or leggings with tunics and knee-high boots for work.

I haven't been weighing myself at home, just at dr. appts. My rule of thumb is to eat healthy but indulge when I really want to (everything in moderation) and to listen to my body. Even if I think I've eaten a lot, if I'm hungry I'm not going to ignore it. The 'overweight' mentality is something I don't think I'll ever get out of (does anyone ever, really?)......but this is an exception. I know that I will/have to gain weight and as long as the doctor is happy with my 'progress' so am I. My pre-pg weight was in the normal/healthy range so my doc suggested I keep gain in the 25-35lb range. That is really my goal, just to stay in that range.

  • I know exactly how you feel. I didn't look pregnant until probably 22 weeks or so. Up until that point, I saw a bump, but it wasn't enough for a stranger to be able to know I was pregnant. I felt very fat and bloated all of the time.

Don't worry - you'll look pregnant before you know it, and then you'll start outgrowing your maternity clothes and wish you were smaller again haha. Just enjoy the ride, and keep taking good care of yourself just like you've been doing.

I obviously don't have experience yet, but I tend to believe that continuing to exercise during pregnancy makes a big difference in getting the weight off after the fact. I'm 33 weeks now and I still walk about 2-2.5 miles a day, 5 days a week, and do weights. I pay close attention to what I eat (lots of protien and dairy for calcium), but I enjoy splurges here and there. My doctor says it will make a huge different post pardum.
