What do/did you abstain from in pregnancy?
The coffee post got me thinking... A lot of you have given or gave up coffee while pregnant. Once again reaffirming my thoughts that I am the worst pregnant woman ever, cause I don't really give up anything.
[Poll]
Re: What do/did you abstain from in pregnancy?
My three things I was strict about:
No booze
No medications/drugs
No sushi
The rest I was fairly open.

I'm prefacing this with saying that because we didn't think we would even get pregnant on our own, and I was higher risk in the first tri, I was a a bit crazy in the "make sure this baby is healthy" department.
I gave up:
Alcohol
Caffeine (I had actually given that up three years ago)
Seafood (I think I had some fish once or twice)
Cheese
Deli meat
Sugar
I also didn't eat anything (or use any body products) that I couldn't pronounce -- so I was very organic.
Crazy, right? It was literally the healthiest I had been in ages!
I don't feel like I gave up too much, but I've become mostly a social drinker (and wasn't very social during my pregnancy) and don't drink coffee. I had sushi during my 2WW and that was it. I had so many food aversions that that mostly made me abstain from a lot. I was not a fan of protein so when I did crave red meat I just had it cooked Medium. I ate seafood b/c of the omega 3s , but again I didn't eat it days in a row. I couldn't eat sweets, which I wish I could abstain from now!
Sadly, meds I couldn't abstain from either, besides Advil. Right after I got pregnant I had to take a few Darvocet b/c of the severe pain from the endo-estrogen spike. I was on meds from the good ole H1N1 and then at the end the hospital had me on a lot of meds. Somehow, my peanut came out pretty darn healthy 5.5 weeks early and is a pretty tough cookie so I'm lucky!
In the end, do what ya gotta do
Oh, I ate soft cheese b/c most are pasteurized now anyways. I only had deli meat once, and I did refrain from licking the brownie spoon :P
I don't eat soft cheese, deli meat/unheated leftovers, or drink alcohol. I've never smoked so that's not an issue. I've also never been a big soda drinker - I may have had 3 sodas this whole pregnancy. I also don't eat cookie dough, but every once in awhile when I crave it I'll mix up a little eggless cookie dough in a teacup...mmmm
).
As for coffee, I never drank it while pg w/ Jake or during the first tri of this pregnancy. After I hit 14 or so weeks, I started drinking 1/2 cup every other day. Now I drink 1 cup of extra super duper bold every day
). With a toddler, I NEED it!!

I abstained from booze and sushi completely. Caffeine, listeria-stuff, fish, and high-nitrate foods I limited.
Like KC, I was a "bad" pregnant lady. I mostly didn't drink, but that doesn't mean I didn't slowly drink something small and not too alcholic every few months.
I also ate any cheese, any meat, and just about any fish I wanted. I avoided super high mercury fish and only had sushi once when I went to the fish market myself to watch them fillet it off the fish. I ate my deli meat sandwiches cold. I continued to eat really old leftovers just like always. I never even considered not eating sweets, and I didn't drink caffeine only because I never drink it as I'm not a coffee or soda person.
Pregnant or not I don't drink alcohol or coffee, eat soft cheeses and I very, very rarely eat deli meat.
I love seafood and ate it when I felt like it and I most certainly did NOT give up sweets!!
No raw fish, no alcohol (other than a few random sips of beer), and no cold deli meat.
Sweets, caffeine, seafood ect is fair game in moderation.
OMG I made cookies the other day. It was torture watching DH lick the bowl while I couldnt!!
I had half a glass of wine in 3rd tri. No soft cheeses and very rarely deli meat. I ate seafood. No artificial sweeteners. No hot dogs (nitrates). I ate sweets when I wanted them.
Edit to add: As far as sushi and raw meat goes, I will not eat anything unless it's cooked to death anyway, so I didnt have to give that up.
The poll doesn't work because you can't choose more than one option.
I abstained from alcohol almost completely. By almost, I mean I took a sip of DH's beer a couple of times.
I did not eat any albacore tuna and limited my consumption of light tuna. I don't normally eat any other high-in-mercury fish (shark, mackerel, tile fish). I ate all other seafood that I would normally eat.
I don't normally drink much coffee but I do drink Diet Coke. I kept my Diet Coke consumption down to 2 cans per day during the first two trimesters. I drank a little more during my third trimester. (BTW, I told my doctor I was drinking 2 diet cokes per day and he was fine with it.)
I didn't eat any non-pasteurized cheeses, but I don't normally do that anyway.
I ate all the deli meat I wanted. Hot dogs and bacon, too. Yum!
WTF gives up sweets? That's not even a recommendation from any doctor I've ever heard of. Obviously I didn't do that, either.
Okay, Erin, here I come to your rescue to make you feel better (or at least to let you know that I'm just as bad)!
I gave up deli meat, sushi, raw oysters, and all forms of tuna (since I only like it rare anyway), but I don't blink an eye at my other typical seafood options (mostly shellfish and occasionally salmon) -- I keep on eating them. I eat soft cheeses that I buy since I know that they are pasteurized. (I avoid them at restaurants & weddings and such.) I'm not much of a caffeine drinker anyway, so I stick to decaf coffee usually, but if I'm at my mom's house it's full-caff all the way, and I also crave/have the occasional Coke. And let's not forget that there's caffeine in chocolate, which I eat non-stop. As for booze, I didn't have any in the first tri (this time -- a few sips of wine last time), but I've had a bit of wine since, particularly in the third tri -- a glass every week or two (sometimes two glasses in a week during the holidays). I don't have any beer or hard liquor, but the wine...ah, the wine.
If they made non-alcoholic red wine, I'd drink it instead, but they don't.
I have a friend who is a PT who says that all of the docs she works with follow the European recommendations, which allow a lot more things in moderation. Their thought is that the state of malpractice suits in America has made our doctors overly cautious in what they recommend.
