Poll: How long did it take to get your formal offer after finding out you got the position?

I'm on pins and needles.  Just curious.  I found out on Thursday (informally), and no offer letter in my in-box as of yet.

  • Maybe it's my profession, but I've never had a "formal" versus "informal" offer.  They've either brought me and made the offer, or given it over the phone and told me when to come in and fill out paperwork.

  • That's a valid point.  I was told that a formal offer would be forthcoming.  I'm just waiting and making myself sick over anticipating when it will pop up into my inbox.

  • My last job took a week and a half.

  • My husband got a verbal offer and then a written offer (pdf) via email that same day or the next I believe. He then got the actual letter via mail within a week.

The last time I got an offer, they sent it to be via email (no verbal) and then mailed it.

  • I was told informally a week ago last Friday. Still waiting with no idea when the formal one will arrive. I've been told it's "in finance now."
  • Did they tell you your start date when they gave you the informal offer?  I signed my formal agreement when I did my new hire paperwork on my first day.

  • When I've gotten written offers they have come in the mail or by Fed Ex, so it has taken at least a couple of days.
  • I got a phone "informal" offer on a Wednesday. The following Monday I went in and signed the formal offer and filled out paper work. Then it took about a week from that point for the background check and everything to clear and for me to get the official e-mail saying everything is all set and my start day and time.
  • it took 2 weeks but only because my company required a background check and driving record check which took awhile. So I got the verbal offer but the actual letter didn't arrive until the day before I started (but I had talked to my new mgr several times in that period).

Not yet.  She just asked, "Do you just need to give the standard 2 week notice?"  To which I replied, "Yes."

Hmm.  Maybe you should follow up regarding your official start date because they may need that information to put on your formal offer letter. Do you have good faith in the new company that they won't rescind their verbal offer?

Oh god, I would hope not.  Yes, they are a pretty established company.  I was hoping not to have to contact them.

  • Mine took 8 months.  But then, I was told that that's how the government works and I should suck it up.  Between the formal offer and the salary negotiation to get to a start date, that was 6 weeks.  SIX WEEKS.  Don't work for the government if you want a job quickly...nobody else operates this ridiculously.
