does anyone have a prepaid cell phone?

I am thinking of going this way.  I rarely use my phone.  Between my husband and I we only use about 50 min. a month!  It is purely for emergencies or  when I am at the store and forgot something or whatever.  I don't text, don't even know how to, I know, I am lame. My phone is not keeping a charge so it is time for a new one and think I need to start thinking prepaid.

So trying to save $$ thinking this is the way to go, but I don't know how they work.  Do you keep your number?  Do you need a new number each time you get a new prepaid card?

Re: does anyone have a prepaid cell phone?

  • I needed a phone without a camera for my work, and the only one besides a blackberry that AT&T sold was one of their prepaid phones. It's a cheap Go-Phone that cost me $15. The phone came with its own SIM card, and therefore number, but I just took the SIM card out of my old phone and put it in the prepaid one and was set to go.

Buying minutes was a separate thing from the #, and you keep the same number for the phone once you have it and just buy more minutes or whatever.

I believe that AT&T would change my # to a prepaid plan if I wanted, but you'd have to ask, and I don't know how the other carriers work since they don't have the SIM cards.
