Chris and I spent a good chunk of yesterday trying to figure everything out, and we decided that the most beneficial decision, at least monetarily, is going to be taking Sami out of daycare for the time being. Luckily, we have generous friends and family who will be able to help us with watching her, and when all is said and done it will now only cost us 1/3 of what we were paying the center. Still, it's going to be sad to tell them Sam isn't coming back in March - we loved her teachers, and we know her teachers love her, and it just really sucks having to take her away from her routine, but we have to do what we have to do.
Luckily, with a letter from my employer stating my pay rate has dropped from 5 days to 3 days, we will be able to opt out of the FSA we had set up for daycare purposes. Otherwise it would have been a money sink, and that just would have added insult to injury.
And HR called me this morning and told me that since I'm taking a 30% paycut, I may be able to apply for some form of unemployment... I'm going to look into it next week. If anyone has any experience with it, I'd love to hear it, though I believe it's more state-by-state regulated... but still, any advice would be awesome.
Now I've found out we are all being forced to take Presidents' Day as an unpaid holiday, so I will be working that Friday instead... Sami will still be in daycare until the end of the month, so it's not a problem this time, but I'm now worried about any other holiday that's bound to come along...
In the meantime I'm looking for parttime work. I applied for a job that's parttime nights doing almost exactly what I do now, as well as a WFH transcribing job, so we'll see what happens...

Thank you again for all the support... it really sucks when Life throws a wrench into all of your plans, but it does help when one knows there are friends out there thinkikng about them. *hug*
Re: F/U to the sucking...
sorry about the suckiness but I am glad you have such good friends and family close by.
I know in NY you can apply for unemployment in your situation, not sure if its the same in MA. Last yr my uncles job cut him from 5 days to 3 and he was able to get unemployment for the 2 days he lost.
GL with everything, I am sure it will all work out.
I'm glad you have a plan, and I hope it works out. It sounds like it will!
I'm applying for unemployment next Tuesday, so I can let you know how that goes, in case there's any useful info for you.
As far as Samma goes, try not to worry about it too much. She's so young that she will adjust to the new routine just fine. She won't even remember the transition. It will be great.
::hugs::

I get seasonal unemployment for the 4 months that the restaurant is closed. My boss files it for us weekly and I set it up as direct deposit so it shows up once a week. I know that they are one of the few who do that down here because they also put their own money into it to keep us from finding a year-round job and not coming back next season, but most people go to the unemployment office and they figure in how much you made in the last few quarters and figures out a weekly amount.
When I worked at starbucks over the winter, I got partial because my hours were so low, I just told my boss (at the restaurant) how many hours I worked at Starbucks and she factored that into her weekly filing and it took however much out what I would have gotten if I wasn't working any extra hours.
I don't know if any of that helps you, but I know you guys will work everything out.
It is always good to have options, and it sounds like a great plan. I agree with Amelia, Sammi will adjust just fine, and won't remember a thing! I don't really know anything about unemployment in MA, but I hope you find some answers soon. Hang in there....
