So our apartment is leaking again... (long)

I'm sure I've complained about this before on here but for anyone who doesn't remember... :) Our apartment has been leaking when it rains since we moved in almost 2 years ago. We thought it was the window, then realized it was the wall around the window and the wall gets mushy every time it rains. They've come out to fix it SO many times but it never actually gets fixed and we end up with the floor and walls soaked every time it rains. Well now with the ice dams we've had water coming through our ceiling (we're on the 2nd of 3 floors). It comes through the walls and literally pours out of the ceiling at times and it continues to spread into other rooms. I've noticed a little mildew on the window frame but I can't imagine what the inside of our walls look like (did I mention this building is only 4 years old??).

So the lease office agreed to let us move into another apartment finally but I don't really know what we should do. We live 2 miles from DH's job so we've been able to get by w/ one car (he rides his bike or I drop him off before work) so we don't want to go so far that we need another car right now. At the same time, I really wish I had known when we moved in that we were a couple hundred feet from the an old industrial dump site that was one of the top 5 most polluted areas in the US and was linked to childhood leukemia in the past. Although there's supposedly not much danger now you can smell it from our parking lot when the wind picks up and it just makes me nervous living near it- esp since we want to have a baby soon. So to me it just seems stupid to go through the hassle of moving into another building in the same complex when I don't want to stay here anyway. And the building we would be switching to is closer to the highway (so prob noisier) and it's at least a 10 min walk to take the trash out- minor, but still a downside. But if we move a few miles north to another apartment, DH will be 5-6 miles from his job and we'll pay at least $200 more per month for the same size apt- which we don't really want to do because we're saving for a house. And they're in complexes that aren't really as nice (we looked at these before). We just got into this apt when the economy was really bad so we got a good deal. And we considered downsizing but, again, we want to get pregnant within the next year and need to have somewhere to put a baby. And if we leave the complex it might not be until May because I don't think they will let us out of our lease.

Sorry this is ridiculously long- thank you to anyone who's still reading :) I just need some opinions on what you would do.

A. Stay in our apartment that leaks (maybe they'll actually fix it this time!) and might have mold.

B. Move to another apartment in the complex (still near the industrial dump site- maybe I'm crazy for thinking about this but it really bothers me for some reason)

C. Move to another complex that's further from DH's job and more expensive

D. You're so sick of reading my long post that you don't even care :)

Thanks guys :)

Re: So our apartment is leaking again... (long)

  • If you guys can't afford to buy now, then at the very least move into the other apt in the complex. Like you said the walls must have major mold inside....this could be extremely harmful to your health. You definitely don't want to bring a baby into this apartment with potential mold and the waste site. If you can up your buy date, that might be the best since the market is low right now.

Sorry in general for your situation....there doesn't seem like a perfect answer.

  • Honestly, there's no price that can be put on your good health.  5-6 miles is negligible, and if you can find something on a bus line maybe you could go out a little farther and pay less.  Even if you had to buy another car, honestly it would be worth spending every penny to stay healthy.  Mold and potential toxins are serious issues--I would move in a heartbeat.  Material things are not worth risking your health for.

  • I completely agree with Rock.
  • I would move.  I know you said you were saving to buy a house, and thinking of TTC in the next year or so....could you maybe just move into a one bedroom for now?  That way you could still save a bit?

I would be too nervous about my health to stay.

  • Thanks, guys. We're still deciding what to do but we're definitely moving out of this apartment. We spoke to the lease office today and they said we can move next week and they'll transfer our deposit and everything- so that's good news. We're still kind of considering leaving the complex but don't really know if it's worth it. If we do that we would have to stay in this leaking (and possibly moldy) apartment until our lease is up in May and then move to the more expensive, smaller apartment that we don't really like then. I did a lot of poking around on the EPA site today to read about the superfund site and it seems like most of the current danger is 3-4 miles south of us. We're close to the site but most of the contamination that poses a threat now is downstream and the website mostly talks about not trudging through the marshes, etc. I still don't like it (and thank goodness we don't own this place!) but I do feel a little better about it I guess. At least the new  apartment won't have mold- there really is no perfect option. Thank you for the opinions!
  • I don't know, Jackie, 3-4 miles is still really close by. Can't you get out of your lease due to the mold issue?  Are there really no other rental options that work for you guys, maybe in a house instead of a complex?  I'd just hate to see you get sick.  Sorry you're in this situation!
