How hard is it...

to READ my fricking name?

This woman writes me today to ask if she can use a photo I took of Lake Broward for a book she's writing for her family and addresses it:

Dear Sandy,

Seriously? And this happens ALL THE DANG TIME. I really don't think Sandy Duncan is so popular these days that you can't address me properly. It happened twice last week too.

Re: How hard is it...

  • After opening tons of email for Garetta in the past 5 years, I have nothing to add but:

  • My dad's name is Gerardo. He is constantly being called Geraldo. He will fill out paperwork (even medical records) with his correct name, and then still receive mail under Geraldo. It's as though they assume that he misspelled his own name. It's way closer than Sandy and Sarah, but I still find it somewhat ridiculous.

  • I hate when that happens!  I've gotten Judy before.  WTF?
  • I get Judy a lot, which isn't far off from Jodi. It still annoys me. My cw's laugh because I'll be on the phone saying, "No, it's Jodi. No, Jooooo Deeeeee!".

  • This is the whole reason I started going by Rai instead of Rhyannon. Those conversations were ridiculous.

    "Rhiann?"

    "Rhyannon."

    "Rhianna?"

    "Rhyannon..."

    "Brianna?"

    "Rhyannon"

    "Ryan?"

"You know what? just say Rai."

    "Rain?"

Rai, how do you properly pronounce your full name? I've only known you by Rai!

And yes, I know your pain. I often get called Jennie (Janie), and I'm like, wha?

It's Ree-Ann-Nun, emphasis on the second syllable.

Incidentally, when I graduated with my AA, we were asked to write our names phonetically on cards so that the announcers could say our names as we walked across the stage. I wrote it exactly the way it's written above, and she said "Rye (like the bread) Nu-Non". My sister took that opportunity to shout from the stands, "That's not how you say it!!"

  • My middle name is Jessie.... NOT Jessica.  It drives me up the wall.  I think that reading is a foreign art.

Ok, that's always the way I thought, but wanted to make sure.

And lol @ your sis. My baby sis would've done that too. I love it!
