Can we talk kindergarten?

Since I am a clueless mom.  Do I have to register Nolan for Kindergarten and if so do I have to do it now (this point in the year)?  I don't want him going to the school we are slated for because everyone has told me to get him into another specific school.  So I guess I have to do that too.  I swear, I don't know how this stuff works.  I can't believe he is going to kindergarten next year!  Is there a nice easy website that explains everything to me?  Thanks  :)

Re: Can we talk kindergarten?

  • Open house for Christopher for Kindergarten was last week,  Even though he goes there for preschool he needed to register.  It is an all day kindergarten in a catholic school.  I would imagin the sooner the better, especially if it's all day.  It may fill up.
  • Yes you have to register them for Kindergarten. In our town they do it at a certain time, I think it was early spring, but if you are looking to get him into a different school then the one he is districted for I would call the school to find out what you should do...
  • Does he go to pre-school?  If so, they should have given you a head's up as to when registration is.  Ours was about 2 weeks ago.  It was only a 3 day window.  So, you may want to check ASAP as to when it is.  You can either call your city/town hall or ask your pre-school, or call the school you're districted for.

In our city they hold a lottery if you choose to send your child to a school other than the one their districted for.

  • http://www.cps.k12.ri.us/ All the registrations are in march, but there's a link on the page. :) You live a few blocks away. Are they telling you to avoid Highlands and go to Rhodes? We're districted for Rhodes, thank god.
  • how do you know what school your child is supposed to go to? Where I live we have 2 elementary schools not sure which one dd is supposed to go to when it comes that time. Its still 2 years away.

Yup, exactly.  Everyone (neighbors, other parents at his school etc) have said go to Rhodes so I guess I have to figure out how to do that.  Why can't it just be easy??

  • Our town sent out the info last week about Kindergarten registration.  It is usually listed in local papers and on district websites.  I can't speak for all districts, but in MOST districts unless there is a really good reason, you go to the designated district school.  We have a few people change because of daycare issues, where they daycare is located in the location of a different school than they are designated for.  Otherwise, people would all choose to change the school their child goes to and you wouldn't be able to handle it.
