education question...

i wasn't sure exactly what category this would fall under but any input would be awesome!... i just started back to RN school this month and i have to take an english class along with a few others(2 maths, micro biology).. but im trying to take 1 class a semester (fall, summer and spring) so i can keep going but not over load myself since i work 40-55 hrs a week... has anyone taken an online english class? if so do you have a certain time that you meet online or anything? or you just get the assignments and do it as your able? is it more difficult online than campus work? we are going to the beach over the summer and of course all the classes start before vacation and end after vacation so im leary on taking an on campus english class... thanks girls!!

Re: education question...

  • Online classes can be easier or more difficult than on-campus courses depending on the professor and your own learning style.  I hated taking online courses because I missed having real discussions with my classmates and instructors and never felt that I retained as much from reading lecture notes and Powerpoint slides as I did from attending a lecture.

You should expect to have firm deadlines and probably group work as well.  It's not going to be a work-at-your-own-pace kind of class.

  • Agree with PP - if you're going on vacation during a class, expect to have to bring the laptop. When I took an online class, we had a certain number of posts we had to make - like we had to post 6 out of 7 days a week, 2 posts responding to others or questions posed by the professor. We also had to do group work, which SUCKED. I got penalized more than once for my group's laziness. I will NEVER take an online course again.

  • I teach an online English class, so I have a slightly different perspective. Online is great for a flexible schedule, but I think a lot of procrastinators really lose out.

Every online school has different set ups and requirements. I do not have group work in my class, fwiw. It also depends if this is an associates, bachelors or masters level course. My advice would be to fill out the online interest forms at some of the schools you are interested in and speak with enrollment counselors about their specific program, requirements, etc. Find the best fit for you - and make sure their class fulfills your requirement. Good luck!

  • It varies depending on the class and professor.  I've taken a few online classes and each one was completely different from the others.

One of my classes was very easy and convenient.  We mostly taught ourselves through reading assignments, answering questions, and doing research.  He told us upfront what his expectations were and listed all assignments for the entire semester within the first week of class.  We could start on them as soon or as late as we'd like.  The only requirement was they had to be turned in by a deadline at the end of the semester.  We also met once a week for an hour in an online chat room to discuss topics.  I loved it because I cracked down early and was able to finish my course work within the first 2 months.

Another online class I had was a nightmare.  The professor wasn't clear about expectations and was horrible about emailing us back if we had a question and was never available to meet in person.  She always had typos in her directions for assignments -- getting the date wrong for deadlines was a common mistake.  She would also post major assignments last minute and expect us to turn them in the next day.  It was completely unreasonable.  I worked nights and couldn't even check my email until the following morning.  It was a lot of extra work and stress.

If the online English course fits into your schedule better then I would give it a try.  I've had mostly positive experiences with them (other than the one listed above), but each professor and course is different.  GL!
