The person who is supposed to plan our 10 year reunion kind of fell off the face of the earth, so, my friends and I picked up the slack and are going to plan it for this summer. Here are some questions I have:
Did you go to your reunion (10 year or any other)?
Would you rather go for dinner or just do drinks (I checked with our school and they have no allowance for the reunion so it would be all out of pocket)?
We are thinking about sending out an invite on FB to get the word out (only because we don't want to pay out of pocket for invites). I know not everyone has FB but without putting a dent in our own pocket, how else would we do it?
Any other tips that would help us to plan this would be great!
Re: High School Reunions
We went to Joe's 5 year - skipped my 5 year and now we skipped his 10 year (it was held the day after Thanksgiving.)
They've done invites on Facebook, and also on Classmates.com. I hated the classmates.com version because you had to pay to join.
I think they set up a paypal account that you could pre-order your tickets, you could also mail in a check.
I was so not into my reunion - so I wouldn't want to do a sit down dinner/drinks. Appetizers and drinks in a large space would be enough for me - coming and going would be easier. I'm sorta anti-my high school though... so I'm not your target demographic!

Did you go to your reunion (10 year or any other)? We didn't have a 10-year, but we had an 11-year. Weird, I know. Yes, I went, and so did my hubby. That's how we started dating :-)
Would you rather go for dinner or just do drinks? We did just drinks & appetizers at a martini bar in my hometown and everyone seemed happy with that. One of our classmates owns a catering business and he donated a bunch of appetizers, so that part was free. We didn't pay for tickets or anything since there wasn't any kind of facility rental fee to cover, but it was a cash bar. People seemed to appreciate that it was low key, inexpensive, and you could come & go as your schedule allowed since there wasn't any formal meal or program or anything.
We are thinking about sending out an invite on FB to get the word out (only because we don't want to pay out of pocket for invites). I know not everyone has FB but without putting a dent in our own pocket, how else would we do it? For ours, invites were sent out via email, and that seemed to work just fine. There was a facebook page too and that helped to collect email addresses for more people, but since not everyone was on facebook at that point (this was in 2006), the email invite seemed to work well.

I planned my HS 10 year reunion and attended my HS 15 year reunion this past fall. There were paper invitations for both reunions, we just figured the cost of the printing and postage into the cost per person. Both were appetizers, buy your own drinks. The 10 year was held at the Shout House and the 15 year was held at Pracna on Main in their back room.
For the 15 year, they sent out a survey to see what people wanted to do, where they wanted to hold it, and how much they wanted to pay. It worked out well.
They had prizes at the 15 year, which was kind of fun. Especially since I won something!
Our 10 year is this summer, and I haven't heard anything about it. I would most likely go if they do something.
I think just drinks and apps would be perfect. We had an informal 5 year reunion, just met up at Majors and everybody just got whatever they wanted.
I think it really depends on the school, maybe? Our school was nothing fancy, nor were the students, so something less casual would be ideal for our group.
I think FB would be the perfect way to spread the word.
I went to mine 2 years ago, and it was pretty low key. They reserved the back room at Ol' Mex in Roseville and people could order drinks, or appetizers if they wanted.
Several months prior to the reunion, they formed a facebook group and asked people what they wanted to do....we all agreed that low key would be the best, so after going over everyone's ideas, this is what they settled on. I actually enjoyed it because it wasn't too formal and was really low pressure.
Once everything was planned, they sent out a Facebook invite with all the details. I think it worked really well.
Good luck and have fun!

I went to my 10 year reunion. We did apps and drinks (everyone got 2 or 3 drink tickets) at Sweeney's in St. Paul, and it was perfect! Everyone wants to talk and catch up, so I think a big dinner is just too much.
We had to pay like $20-25 per person, and we paid on paypal....super easy!

I didn't go to my 10 year which was this summer (I'm class of 2000).
It was on a Saturday in the summer which is when we go to the cabin. We had guests that weekend anyway so that made up my mind for me. I hear the reunion had really poor attendance. I'm not sure why that is. I remember there being a cost involved that seemed higher that I would want to pay to see random high school people I haven't kept in touch with. If Facebook didn't exist I might be more curious about classmates and want to go but only if the cost was minimal ($5 to get in and then you can order whatever drinks you want - that is how my 5 year was and that was fun and SUPER casual at The Local.)
I'm from the middle of nowhere Wisconsin and we're having issues planning our 10-year for this spring also. It was always kind of a thing, that the class officers would help plan it, and I graduated as class secretary, so I've been asked to help, even though I'm pretty far away. And of the other three officers, two of them aren't on Facebook and three of us are 350-1,000 miles away from our hometown. Not going so well so far.
Most of the people who stuck around near our hometown think a kegger in a field is completely acceptable for a reunion and I've tried to reason with people that people who live far away won't come back for a kegger, but it sounds like most of my classmates (who not surprisingly are still living in or near our hometown) think that this idea, or a get together in our hometown dive bar is ok. It's frustrating! I'm trying to sway the idea more toward a dinner at a steakhouse in Madison or something....
These are some good ideas, I'll have to pass along some more suggestions to our planners as well!
My 10 yr reunion is also this year, but I haven't heard anything yet. There was a 5 yr reunion (not really sure why) right around Christmas, but I didn't go because I was out of town. It was at Gleuk's in downtown and I heard from other people that it was a lot of fun. I don't think there was a fee and they had a cash bar and apps.
My 10-year reunion was a year and a half ago. I didn't go. I have no real desire to catch up with anyone I haven't stayed in touch with over the years.
I think drinks and apps would be fine for a reunion.
