Need Dessert Ideas

K and I are having dinner w/ friends on Sunday and I'm bringing dessert.  Normally, easy-peasy, I've got a freaking arsenal worth of good recipes.  Problem?  Their younger son is allergic to nuts, dairy & eggs and I really don't want him to have to either skip dessert or drag out his epi-pen because I can't be accommodating.  Any ideas?

Re: Need Dessert Ideas

  • A HA!!!! something I can say that won't make angry the towns folk!!!

Here at our house Liv is just as your friends son. We stick to fresh fruits- fruit salad mostly. Her favs are grapes, strawberries, bananas, pears and apples. I recommend maybe spritzing it up with some Pom Juice! :o) Liv LOVES that stuff!! You can never really go wrong going back to mother nature :o) If this is too boring I suggest you spice it up with some exotic fruits from the organic section-- star fruit, cumquats, and the like.

    I hope this was helpful.

  • i like the idea of fruits--you could do fruits with whipped cream for those without the allergies and then do fruit with the pom for the little one with the allergies!
  • Agreed on the fruits.  You could easily make a beautiful display.  I like Shauni's suggestion about whipped cream.  There are so many dips/toppings out there lately, that you could probably supply a nice variety.  (Caramel, chocolate, whipped cream, etc.)

  • I also like the fruit idea. I've made this a ton of times before: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Annies-Fruit-Salsa-and-Cinnamon-Chips/Detail.aspx

You can easily change the fruits to match whats in season or even use frozen, just let them thaw first. Oh, and for the fruit preserves part of the recipe, it definitely requires more than 3 tbs. to make a salsa like consistency but then it gets really sweet so I'd opt for a sugar-free preserves.

  • Doesn't the whipped cream have dairy?

I was going to suggest a trifle but I figured you couldn't with the whipped cream topping.

I figured the fruit in jello would be fun for a kid.  God knows I still go gaga for it.

  • Thanks girls.  Thought of the fruit idea, but NOTHING is in season here and I'm a snob about having local produce.  Will definitely be trying the fruit salsa & cinnamon chips come summer, though.  And Alicia - I still go nuts for JELL-O too!!

  • Saw this cookbook on Amazon (no nuts, no eggs, no dairy!) and if you click "search inside this book" you can actually find 3 complete recipes for apple pie, banana bread, and an apple-apricot cake. Hopefully this helps! :)

You know, for the trifle, I use canned fruit cocktail.   I try to use a cake that isn't very sweet on the bottom to balance it out.

hmmm....I think I might make one of these soon.  Talking about it is making me crave it.
