Annie (or anyone else who has dealt w/ milk intolerance)

Have you given Nolan any dairy? If so, how did it go? We are still in the "I don't know if she really has a milk intolerance issue" camp. Last night I ate pizza and she spit up three times this morning, but two weeks ago I ate pizza and she didn't spit up at all. I really want to try giving her some yogurt, but I'm scared.

Re: Annie (or anyone else who has dealt w/ milk intolerance)

  • We just started on dairy last week following his 9 month appointment.  I was told at his 6 month to try it, but I was still nursing then and not entirely convinced he had outgrown it.  The week before I weaned completely to formula, I ate dairy and he seemed okay - not screaming during/after feedings, but still a little heavy on the spit-up.   We just tried cottage cheese this week (pedi advised to start with cheeses, then move to yogurts and soft cheeses, then milk, and lastly butter - not that I want Nolan to eat much butter)  She said to look for bloody, mucusy (sp?) stools.    He doesn't really like the texture of the cottage cheese, and has only tried one small piece of cheddar cheese, but we also are battling some fussy eating following the stomach bug he had.  So far, his stools have been okay.   I think we'll try yogurt next week.  I don't blame you for being nervous!  It took me 3 months and a second opinion to feel ready!
  • I had the same worry. I've told my story before, but Eli had blood in his stool so pedi had me go off dairy. After 3 months there were still traces of it so we went to a pedi GI specialist. She said it was a common issue since their bellies just aren't used to it. She had me go back on dairy gradually and then advised to start Eli on it around 6 months and see how he does. I was hesitant so we waited until closer to 9/10 months to try and he did fine. He also did fine with the transition to whole milk when he turned 1.

  • We're still weaning into the regular formula before we can try yogurts etc. Things are so difficult since teething symptoms are always playing a role in things. My Dr told me not to be alarmed with spitting up etc though and to call him if I saw blood in her stools or her abdomen started bothering her and turning hard again. It's so difficult not to read everything little thing you do and give them into it though!
