Must be a great day on the NFL board..(vent)

This could not come at a worse time....

DH works for a small local company and meets with the 2 owners every Wednesday morning to discuss business.  This morning he was totally surprised when they told him they noticed he doesn't seem to be happy with what he is doing (he is not) and offered to give him a 3 months serverence package if he wanted to leave.  He can choose to take the package and start looking for another job or stay with them, but we are both worried if he chooses that route that they could decide to fire him and we would lose out on 3 months pay.

I am scared sh!tless right now!  DH has alway had the better paying job and honestly we need him income to pay the mortgage and survive.  The 3 months salary will allow us to pay the bills while he looks for another job, but I am so scared it will take longer than than and then we will be screwed financially since we do not have nearly enough in saving to cover all our expenses after that.  Plus, with the baby coming in 3 months that is making me freak out more about extra costs and we are not currently paying for.

I told DH that he needs to sit down and figure out what he wants to do and I would support him in whatever he decides (stay at current job or quit and look for a new one).  I realize that he is really unhappy doing what he is doing but at the same time the market (and pay) in Tallahassee completely sucks as far as sales manager positions are concerned.  I suggested he look at applying for positions in other cities and we would move if need be but then we have the whole house issue that we are currently underwater with.  Ugh..I hate this feeling of the unknown and being 6 months PG this is really the last thing I wanted to have to deal with.

  • Oh K, I'm SO SO sorry to hear that.  I hate the feeling of not knowing too.

Could he turn down the severance package and tell them he'd like to keep working there... and then still look for other jobs?  Or is that what they would fire him for?

    What terrible, terrible timing. :(

  • Wow K&K. I am so sorry! They're really putting him in a crappy position. Sad

What type of sales is he in? Think a move to Jax is in your future? (Selfish thinking on my behalf, I know).

  • I am so sorry. I guess that's somewhat generous of them to at least offer the severance. Kind of sounds like they're giving him an out rather than fire him and have their unemployment rate go up, or they won't hire anyone to replace him and keep their salary expenses lower.

I think it's great you're supporting him with what he decides, I can't imagine how hard it must be especially being 6 mo. pregnant.

Yuck, what a crappy NFL day :(

Lots of T&P for you. Good luck, try to stay positive!

He could turn down the package and still work there however, with how things have been going for the last 6 months and his office NOT making their monthly sales goal he is afraid that the owners might decide in a few months to fire him based on the fact that the office is performing poorly.  If that is the case, then no severence package, so that might put us more in a bind financially.

  • I'm so sorry to hear this K&K.  I can't even begin to imagine how hard a decision this must be for you both right now.

He curently is in copier/printer sales.  Before this he worked for Xerox in public sector sales and before that he was a commerical sales manager with Ferguson.  I did mention to look for a job in Jax since the job pool is probably bigger than Tallahassee but I don't know if he was really listening to me (and, yes I did think about all the great nesties who are in JAX I wuold finally get to hang out with Embarrassed).  Problem is he doesn't know that he wants to do sales anymore, which I totally understand.  His "dream" job is the be a farmer and as much as he wants to do that I don't see it as a realistic possibility right now.

  • I'm sorry that you guys even have to put in the position to make this decision right now. I'm sure it's stressful. I can see the pros and cons of either decision.

  • Something to look into...

I believe he can still file for UE benefits if he gets a severance package (gets laid off), but not if he's fired down the road.  This might be a deal breaker for me if 100% true.

I was going to have him look up whether he would even be able to applied for UE if he takes a severance package.  I know it will not be that much but any money coming in until he find another job is better than nothing!

I think he can...but definitely don't take my word on it. When the last company I worked for did a big layoff they were all offered severance packages & they could collect unemployment.

I'm so sorry. Hugs. Left Hug

  • I'm so sorry, Kelly! I hope he figures out something soon.

  • I am so sorry. That is a really tough decision.

If it helps you can get UE benefits even if he gets a severance package. I was laid off a few years ago and could apply for UE even while collecting my severance. A coworkers husband had the same situation about a year ago

    Good Luck!

  • Wow. I'm so sorry to hear this. That's a really difficult decision and the timing just makes it that much harder. I really hope that you and DH can come to a decision that works best not just financially but for sanity's sake!

  • I'm really sorry!  I hope that your DH got the offer for a severance package in writing. I would hate for him to say yes to that deal and then have them decide against it!

My DH works in the same field here and business is tough for his company now as well.  It might help if they hired someone with the experience it sounds like your DH has.  Do you want me to ask my H to put out the feelers?

I was just thinking of this earlier, that he need to make sure he got the serverence offer in writing so that they couldn't decide later just not to pay it!

If you wouldn't mind asking your H that would be really helpful!  I know the industry as a whole is just sucking right now.  Before this job he worked for Xerox and in the 1.5 years he worked for them they cut his salary by almost 50% from when he first started.  Do you mind me asking what company he works for?  You can always PM me if you don't want to post here.  Thanks!

  • I'm sorry.  I hope that something comes up soon (maybe even in Jax!)
  • Aww...I'm sorry girl.  Let me know if you need anything, even if it's just to go out for coffee and chit chat.
  • I'm so sorry. I hope he finds something soon. You are an awesome wife for supporting whatever he wants to do.
  • What a crappy situation and crappy timing. I know you guys will be ok, regardless of his decision.  Good luck.
