Travel Necessities

What are your must have travel necessities? Specifically for longer trips out of the country.

Re: Travel Necessities

  • For me it's this. And in it I have everything that DH and I need in terms of bathroom stuff. I hang it in the hotel bathroom and I can easily find everything and when we move on to the next location I can see that I haven't forgotten anything.

I've also added a corkscrew/bottle opener to it. We have been in far to many countries where we've bought wine/beer to drink in our hotel room only to not have anything to open it. Dh though is pretty crafty and has used his shoe and a table surface to open things.

Another must have thing for me is ear plugs. I need so sleep in quiet so having them has saved me from sleepless nights.

  • I 2nd a travel bag like eeeva suggested. My brother always travels with one, and it's on my wish list of things.

I also never travel without an abundance of books, or now my Kindle. I always find us waiting for something or DH will fall asleep randomly in the middle of the day or too early at night. If I have a book, I don't get as bored.

  • Ditto what's been said above.  I'm also a fan of the eye mask for the plane, and I may invest in my own pillow and blanket this year.  I've started to be a bit of a germ phobe when it comes to planes.  I also recommend lots of vitamins for sleeping and warding off getting run down due to jet lag.  And lastly, see my post below to Eva about the Capital One card--no international finance charges.  I totally forgot about your upcoming trip to SA or I would have flagged you too.

  • I'm going to agree with what everyone has said. I love my travel bathroom bag. I keep sample sized bathroom products in it. I am a finicky sleeper and also travel with my eye mask, ear plugs and sleeping pills.

Otherwise, I take a power adapter, chargers for my camera battery, comfortable shoes, and lightweight clothes that can be layered.

  • Like others have said, I have my hanging toiletry bag and always take extra baby wipes and/or TP, you never know when you need it.  Also, I get bad migraines so I make sure that I bring migraine meds with me so that I don't have to take something from a pharmacy that I don't know.  I also make sure to bring enough power adapters for my electrical stuff.

We also make sure that we have a copy of our passports and travel documents with us, with someone at home and online/emailed to myself.  That may be a bit of overkill, but if you lose your passport or run into problems, it is always nice to have copies of that kind of stuff.  Having the number and address of the local U.S. Consulate isn't a bad idea either.  Hopefully you won't ever run into problems but there is no telling when there will be an issue.

  • If you have a lot of electronic goods, cameras, laptop, or things. We sometimes bring a surge protector so we can hook up and charge all our things in one place. It also helps if your stuck at an airport.
