my niece knew who i was :)
lauren - i know you're about to be in the [reverse] spot as me - your brother/SIL taking your nephew across the world....... and even ashlee, you guys live so far away from family too......
anywho, i was quite thrilled that even though DH & I live 8,000 miles away from my niece, and the only times we've seen each other was when she was 3 weeks, 4 months and then 1 year old.............. she is now 22 months and she knew exactly who i was when we saw each other face to face 
we were bff.
my sister has been showing her pictures of me and she can point us out in photos. we also skype with them as much as we can (though not often enough :-/) and my sister has my picture saved on her phone so when i call, she sees my picture. my sister talks about me to my niece as well. when i send her gifts, my sister makes sure to tell her who it's from and shows her my picture.
so - if you're tooooo far away from your niece or nephew (or your family is too far away from your [now or future] kiddos) - you will not be forgotten as long as the parents remind them you're there just wanted to share!

Aw, I'm glad she knew you! My niece was always good about knowing who I was (and even Shawn). It helped that my parents keep one of our engagement photos out on a table that's low enough for her to see, and they and my brother would "drill" my niece every time she came over, asking who was in the picture.
When she was still too little to say much, you could see her make the connection between us and our photo.
I'm just bummed that she's super shy around people she doesn't know well, so most visits, she just finally gets warmed up to me as I'm about to leave.
